About this experience

This is not just your typical tour of the south of Iceland with a chance to see the northern lights. Your adventure starts from KEF airport and to the warm waters of the Blue Lagoon, explore the nature less travel to Þórsmörk, Eyjafjallajökull, and the vast glaciers of Vatnajökull, without forgetting the most scenic Golden Circle area. All with the help of a local guide to give you the best insights.


Day 1: Airport pickup – The Blue lagoon – Cabin

Your guide picks you up at Keflavík airport at your requested time with a stop at the famous Blue Lagoon, only 20 minutes away.

After a revitalising bath and lunch, we drive to the south coast of the Reykjanes peninsula to start exploring the natural wonders. Get a delicious 3-course meal in a local restaurant to complete your first day.

And now, you recharge your batteries in your private cabin with a chance of seeing the Northern Lights.


Day 2: Þórsmörk & Eyjafjallajökull ADVENTURE

We combine these two gems into a one-day trip. Both are unique in their own way. Þórsmörk, a nature reserve known for its dramatic landscape, spectacular hikes and jaw-dropping views, and the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier. To get to the top of Eyjafjallajökull we drive up the slopes of the glacier, towards the caldera on the volcano. On the way, we’ll see spectacular views from 1600 meters.

Note: Eyjafjallajökull is a weather-dependent tour, and Southcoast Adventure reserves the right to change or alter the tour, with your safety as our priority.

Once again, you will be treated to delicious meals throughout the day and rest in your cabin for the evening. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the sky, will make sure to help you as well.


Day 3: Glacier Lagoon

On day three, we drive towards Europe´s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull. Covering approximately 11% of Iceland, many of the country’s most spectacular sights are located there, like the Glacier Lagoon and the world-famous diamond beach.

After a day of exploring out-of-this-world landscapes, have a lovely meal in the picturesque town of Vík before returning to your cabin in the evening.


Day 4: Golden Circle and drop off in Reykjavík

The Classic Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s finest jewels. See Gullfoss, a 31-meter-high waterfall, plunge into a narrow gorge, feel the geothermal spray from Strokkur gushing hot spring in the Geysir area and go for a walk through Þingvellir National Park, where the two tectonic plates drifted apart and Vikings roamed around.

All this with a delicious meal from a local restaurant, which will make it all even more magical.

Finally, we drive to Reykjavík, where you can experience the culture of modern Iceland.

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a solid cloud forecast — most operators call it by late afternoon and let you rebook on a clearer night free of charge. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Southcoast Adventure decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

    Our tour guide Alejandro took us to experience glaciers in Vík, where we got to hike in the glaciers which was an amazing experience. We got told about how the glaciers move, how a small hole can turn into a big pile of snow, stones and ice. Later on we went on buggy rides where we went off road and drove to Eyjafjallajökull. We drove through fields, stones, snow and ice, we got told “you can get as wet as you want” as we drove through the lakes. Alejandro always made sure we were safe and comfortable, he would turn around to check on us if we got stuck. Waited for us if we lacked behind. And even though we drove through dark fields with very little visibility, we still felt safe. It was a great experience, and Alejandro made the experience even better. I would highly recomend Southcost Adventure.

    We did the 5hr buggy buggy tour today, by far the best day in Iceland so far. Alejandro was an absolute amazing guide, seen waterfalls, caves, and a glacier that we would have never seen otherwise. Alejandro also took us on an incredible hike to one of the falls.     Absolute number 1 excursion we have ever done! Our Eyjafjallajökull Snowmobiling Tour with Southcoast Adventures was an absolute highlight of our trip to Iceland—and we travel a lot! We spent about 2 hours on the snowmobiles and covered a huge portion of the glacier. Riding all the way to the top to experience the intense wind and the breathtaking views was unforgettable. Our guides, Ale and Martin, were phenomenal. Ale was incredibly patient and helpful while teaching us how to operate the machines. Even when we managed to tip our snowmobile over, they handled it perfectly. Their attitudes throughout the entire tour were tremendous. This truly felt like a once-in-a-lifetime outing. I cannot recommend this adventure and this team highly enough!

Northern lights — questions people ask

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Iceland?

September to April, when the nights are dark enough. Within that, late September to March gives the longest dark hours, and the equinox months, September and March, often have active skies. There are no lights in June or July; the sky never gets dark. Anyone selling you a June lights tour is selling you a bus ride. Give yourself at least three nights, because clouds, not the aurora, are the usual reason people miss them.

Are the northern lights guaranteed on a tour?

No. Nobody can promise them, and we will not. Two things have to line up: a clear sky and solar activity. Guides check the cloud forecast at vedur.is and drive to gaps, which is the real value of a tour over standing outside your hotel. What most operators do promise is a free second attempt if the lights do not show. Check the exact retry policy on the tour page, because the number of retries and the validity period vary.

Is a northern lights bus tour or a boat tour better?

Bus, if you want the best odds. A minibus can drive an hour inland to find a clear patch; a boat stays in Faxaflói and sees whatever sky is over Reykjavík. Boats are shorter, about two hours, and pleasant with hot chocolate, and Reykjavik Sailors' cruise (/experience/6637/) includes a free retry. For a serious hunt, a small-group minibus like BusTravel's (/experience/150646/) or a 4x4 tour (/experience/1088067/) is the better bet.

Can I see the northern lights from Reykjavík itself?

Yes, on strong nights. The city is small and the sky over the sea to the north is fairly dark. Grótta lighthouse at the western tip and the Ægisíða shoreline are the usual spots, twenty minutes' walk from the centre. On average nights the street lights drown out a faint aurora, which is why tours drive out. If the forecast shows high activity and clear sky, walk to Grótta first and save the tour money.
