Northern lights tonight in Iceland

Iceland sits under the auroral oval, so Kp 2 to 3 is already enough for a visible display on a clear, dark night. Kp 5 and above can put lights overhead in Reykjavík itself. Cloud matters more than Kp here — a Kp 6 night under thick cloud shows you nothing, while Kp 2 under a clear sky away from town is often a decent green arc.

September to April. From May to August the sky never gets properly dark, so the aurora cannot be seen even when the solar activity is strong. Anyone selling a June northern lights tour is selling you a bus ride.

Any time it is dark, but activity is most often between 21:00 and 01:00. Tours usually leave between 20:00 and 22:00 and run three to four hours, because that is where the odds sit.

Most operators let you join another night free, usually within your stay or the season. That is their policy, not a promise from us, and the exact terms are on each tour page. Nobody honest guarantees the aurora.

On a marginal night, yes — a guide watches the cloud radar and drives to the gap, which can be an hour away in a direction you would not have guessed. On a clear, high-activity night you can do fine yourself, 20 minutes out of Reykjavík away from streetlights.
