Keflavík Airport transfer: shared shuttle or private?
Every Iceland trip starts at Keflavík. Shared shuttle or private transfer? The right answer depends on group size and landing time more than budget.
The short version
- Shared shuttle to Reykjavík: about €30 to €40 a seat, 45 to 75 minutes with hotel drop-offs. The default for one or two people.
- Private transfer: about €140 to €235 per car, straight to your door. Cheaper per head than the shuttle from three people up.
- Landing after 23:00 or before 06:00: book private. Shuttle frequency drops and the wait is cold.
- Via the Blue Lagoon: airport, lagoon, then Reykjavík in one private transfer, about €387 per car for up to four.
Short answer: one or two people with a normal daytime landing take the shared shuttle for €30 to €40 a seat. Three or more people, or anyone landing at night, book a private car at €140 to €235 for the whole vehicle and split it. Everything below is the reasoning, with the prices we sell at today.
Keflavík is 45 to 50 minutes from Reykjavík on a clear road, and there is no train. Every arriving visitor makes the same choice between a scheduled shuttle bus and a car that waits for you, and the right answer depends on group size and landing time far more than on budget.
Shared shuttle
The cheaper option per person, running on a fixed schedule tied to flight arrivals. You’ll typically wait 20–30 minutes at the airport for the bus to fill or depart on schedule, then it makes one to three hotel drop-offs before yours, adding 15–30 minutes over a direct drive. For a solo traveller or a couple with a flexible first evening, this is the sensible default — reliable and inexpensive.
Private transfer
A private car picks you up the moment you’re through customs and drives straight to your door — no waiting, no other stops. The price is per car, not per person, so for a family of four or a small group splitting the cost it can end up close to shared-shuttle pricing per head while saving 30–45 minutes and the wait. It’s also the better choice for very early or very late flights, when shared shuttle frequency drops.
The Blue Lagoon detour
If your flight lands mid-morning or leaves late afternoon, the airport-to-lagoon-to-Reykjavík transfer is the smartest first (or last) day in Iceland: the Blue Lagoon is 20 minutes from the airport, and a soak beats sitting in a hotel lobby waiting for check-in. Our honest take
Solo or two travellers with no tight schedule — shared shuttle is fine and saves money. Groups of three or more, anyone landing at an odd hour, or anyone who just wants to walk out and go — book the private transfer; split three or four ways it often isn’t much pricier, and the time and hassle saved is real.
