What to book on your first day in Iceland depends on your landing time, nothing else
A first-day plan for each Keflavík landing slot — 06:00, midday, evening and late night — with the one tour worth booking for each and what to leave alone.
Every plan starts at Keflavík Airport. Day 1 is arrival, and arrival day is the one people most often get wrong, either by booking a nine-hour tour on no sleep or by booking nothing and wasting a bright afternoon. The airport is about 45 minutes from Reykjavík. Add an hour for bags, passport control and the transfer, and your usable day starts roughly two hours after the wheels touch down. Work back from that.
Landing around 06:00 to 08:00
This is the North American red-eye. You’ve slept badly or not at all, and it’s still dark in winter. Do not book a whale trip or a Golden Circle day. Book the lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon is 20 minutes from the airport and about 45 from the city, which makes it the only major attraction that’s on your way rather than out of it. IceTransfer.is runs the Keflavík Airport to Blue Lagoon to Reykjavík transfer (from €387, four hours) that collects you at arrivals, waits while you soak, and drops you at your hotel around midday. Book a Blue Lagoon slot for about two hours after landing. Two hours in 38°C water after a night flight is the best jet-lag cure we know, and you arrive at the hotel clean, warm and ready to sleep or walk.
The downside is the cost, and the Blue Lagoon’s habit of closing at short notice during Reykjanes eruptions. If it’s shut, take the standard transfer, check in, sleep two hours, walk the seafront.
Landing around midday to 14:00
Mostly European flights. You’re rested, you’re at the hotel by 15:00, and you have an afternoon and a long summer evening. This is the slot where a real tour fits.
In summer, BusTravel Iceland’s Golden Circle Afternoon Tour (from €86, eight and a half hours) leaves early afternoon and runs Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss with the crowds gone and the light low. Confirm the pickup time against your landing before you book; a 13:00 landing won’t make a 13:00 pickup. If that’s too tight or too long, Elding’s Classic Whale Watching (from €103, three hours) from the Old Harbour has a 17:00 departure in summer and puts you back on land by 20:00 for dinner. In winter, when afternoon light is short, take the 13:00 whale boat if you can make it or hold the afternoon for the city.
Landing after 16:00
Too late for daytime tours; you’re at the hotel at 18:00 or 19:00. In summer, eat, then walk. The light lasts until midnight in June and July and the seafront path from Harpa to the Sun Voyager is the best free thing in the city.
From September to April, this is your northern lights slot. BusTravel Iceland’s Northern Lights Bus Tour (from €71, four hours) picks up around 21:00, so you have time to check in and eat first. Booking it on night one is deliberate: if it’s cloudy, you rebook free on a later night, and the earlier you start the more nights you have to use that. Nobody can promise the lights, but booking them first gives you the most chances.
Don’t do this if you landed at 19:00 after an overnight flight. Standing in a car park at midnight in -3°C on no sleep is miserable whatever the sky does.
And if you land after 22:00, book nothing. Transfer, check in, sleep. Your first real day is tomorrow, and the best thing you can do for it is a 09:00 start with a clear head. Book tomorrow’s tour tonight if you like; leave today alone.
Our honest take
Early landing, Blue Lagoon on the way in and nothing else. Midday landing, the afternoon Golden Circle in summer or a whale boat in winter. Evening landing, a lights tour from September to April, a seafront walk from May to August. Late landing, bed.
The one rule under all of it: no tour over four hours on the day you land, unless you slept properly on the plane. Iceland rewards the well-rested. It punishes the ambitious on day one.
