Blue Lagoon and northern lights: one day or two?

Do them on different days. The one-day combo is 15 hours and €306; the lagoon fits your arrival or departure, and a €73 lights bus fits any clear night.

Blue Lagoon and northern lights: one day or two?

The short version

  • The only shared combo we sell is Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon and a lights hunt in one 15-hour day, from €306, minimum age 14.
  • A private lagoon-and-lights evening is €598 for the whole group, picking up at 20:00.
  • You can see the lights from the lagoon on a strong, clear night, but it is floodlit and steamy. Nobody should promise it.
  • The simplest plan: the lagoon on your way to or from Keflavík, and a lights tour on your first clear night.

Do them on different days. The Blue Lagoon is twenty minutes from Keflavík Airport, so it fits best on the day you land or the day you fly. The northern lights depend on a clear night, which you cannot book in advance, so the lights tour wants to go on whichever evening the forecast is good. Tie the two together and one of them ends up on the wrong day.

Can you see the lights from the lagoon?

Sometimes. The lagoon is outdoors in a lava field, and on a strong night with a clear sky the aurora can be overhead while you are in the water. But the lagoon is lit so people can see where they are going, there is a great deal of steam coming off the water, and you are looking up through both. A faint display will simply not show.

So treat it as a bonus if it happens, not a reason to go in the evening. The lights are possible from September to April. Sightings depend on cloud and on the sun, and nobody can promise either.

The one-day combo

BusTravel Iceland’s Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon & Northern Lights Small Group Tour is from €306, with a Comfort admission ticket to the lagoon included. It is a small-group Golden Circle day of about eleven hours, with Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið, then the lagoon, then back to Reykjavík. After a short break you are picked up again for a lights hunt of about four hours.

That is up to 15 hours. It is a long day for anyone and a very long one if you landed that morning. The minimum age is 14, and free cancellation ends two days before. Lunch is not included, though there are stops to buy it.

It makes sense for one kind of trip: a short stopover where you have one full day and want all three things in it. Otherwise it squeezes a good day and a good night into one tired one.

The private evening

Protour’s Northern Light Tour + Blue Lagoon is from €598, and that price is for the group, not per person. Pickup is at 20:00, you go to the lagoon first, then hunt for the lights with a driver-guide for three to five hours. It runs August to May.

It is the comfortable version, and for four people it is not outrageous. For two it is expensive. The listing does not say whether lagoon tickets are included, so check that with us before you book.

The better plan: two separate things

The lagoon on the way in or out. Stop at the Blue Lagoon on the drive or transfer between Keflavík and Reykjavík, and you have spent none of a full day on it. Our Blue Lagoon on the way in or out guide covers the timing and the luggage. The lagoon has closed several times since late 2023 during eruptions near Grindavík, so check it is open close to the date.

The lights on the first clear night. The Northern Lights Bus Tour from Reykjavík is from €73, four hours, leaving at 20:30, 21:30 or 22:30, with a free retry if you see nothing. Book it early in your trip so the retry has room. If you prefer the sea, the Northern Lights Cruise is from €106 from the Old Harbour. If you want a smaller group that can drive further for a gap in the cloud, the Northern Lights Super Jeep Tour is from €190.

Our northern lights bus, boat or super jeep guide compares those three properly.

What it costs, side by side

For one adult, the one-day combo is €306 with the lagoon ticket. The separate plan is the €73 lights bus plus a lagoon ticket bought for the day you land or leave, plus a transfer if you have no car. The separate plan usually costs about the same or less, and it gives you a retry on the lights and a lagoon visit that is not at the end of an eleven-hour day.

Our honest take

Two days, not one. Put the lagoon on your arrival or departure day, and book the €73 lights bus for your first night with a decent forecast.

Take the 15-hour combo only if you genuinely have one day in Iceland and nothing else will fit. Take the private evening if there are four of you and you would rather not share a bus. And if you see the lights from the water, enjoy it. Just don’t plan the trip around it.
