What is a super jeep?+
A four-wheel-drive truck or van rebuilt for Iceland: raised suspension, huge low-pressure tyres and a snorkel, so it can cross rivers, drive on snow and climb glacier tracks that stop a rental car. Groups are small, usually eight to sixteen people. Super jeeps are how you reach Landmannalaugar in the highlands, ice caves under Mýrdalsjökull and dark northern-lights spots off the main roads. They are pricier than a coach, and rougher.
Is a super jeep northern lights tour better than a bus?+
Slightly, for two reasons. A super jeep can leave the tarmac and find darker, more sheltered spots, and with ten people rather than fifty you spend less time waiting at stops. Arctic Adventures' Northern Lights Explorer (/experience/209/) and Northern Lights by 4x4 (/experience/1088067/) are the standard options. The sky is the same either way; a jeep does not make clouds part. If budget matters, a small-group minibus gets you most of the benefit.
When can you take a super jeep to Landmannalaugar?+
Late June to September, once the highland roads open. The Landmannalaugar Safari (/experience/341/) is a twelve-hour day from Reykjavík with river crossings, a short hike and a soak in the natural hot river. The rest of the year the road is closed to everything except specially licensed winter expeditions. The dates the F-roads open vary each year with the snow, so if you are booking for June, expect a possible reschedule.
Is a super jeep tour comfortable?+
Comfortable enough on the tarmac, bumpy on the rough stuff. That is the point. Expect to be thrown about on lava tracks and river beds, and to sit in a bench seat for several hours. People prone to motion sickness should sit in front and take a tablet. The trade-off is access: you see places coaches cannot go, with a driver-guide who talks to you rather than over a microphone.
Are private super jeep tours worth the money?+
Only for a group of six or more, or if you need a specific schedule. A private 4x4 (/experience/1097653/ for northern lights, /experience/1020554/ for Landmannalaugar) costs roughly the same whether two or eight people go, so the per-person price drops fast with a full car. For a couple, a shared small-group super jeep tour gives you the same vehicle and route for a fraction of the cost.
How much do super jeep tours cost?+
From €117 to €1909 a person, with a typical price of €293. That is the median of 49 per-person day-tour fares we currently sell. Multi-day packages and private charters are priced differently and sit outside those figures.
What is the cheapest of the super jeep tours?+
Into The Glacier - For Super Jeeps with Arctic Adventures, at €117 a person. Read what it actually is before booking on price alone — the cheapest line is sometimes an admission ticket rather than a guided trip, and a large coach costs less per seat than a small-group minibus because it gives you less time at each stop.
Why do some super jeep tours not show a price?+
6 of the 143 are priced on request rather than published, which almost always means a private charter where the cost depends on group size and pickup point. Ask us and we will get a quote from the operator.
How many super jeep tours do you sell, and who runs them?+
143 of them, from 31 operators: Gravel Travel, Arctic Adventures, Midgard Adventure, Local Guide of Vatnajökull, Katlatrack, Ice Explorers and 25 more. Every one is a company we hold a contract with — we do not list everything in Iceland, on purpose.
How long do super jeep tours take?+
Day tours run from 1 hour to 13 hours, most commonly about 7.5 hours. Pickup and drop-off are usually inside that figure, so a three-hour tour from Reykjavík can mean closer to four door to door.
Are there multi-day options among the super jeep tours?+
Yes — 3 of the 143 run over two days or more. Those include accommodation and usually breakfast; check the individual itinerary.
Do super jeep tours include hotel pickup?+
120 of 143 (84%) offer pickup. The rest ask you to meet on location. Pickup is the single most common cause of a missed tour in Iceland: it runs to a window rather than a time, and the bus will not wait long.
Can I book a private version of the super jeep tours?+
67 of the 143 are private, the other 76 are shared departures. Private costs more in total but is priced per vehicle, so for four or more people it often works out close per head — and you set the pace.
When can I do the super jeep tours?+
Across the next 360 days of live availability we hold departures in October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September. That is a rolling window rather than the whole year, so a month missing from that list is not necessarily a month with nothing running.
Are the super jeep tours seasonal?+
81 of 143 run only part of the year; the other 62 run all year round. In Iceland that is usually about daylight or ice rather than demand.
How late can I book super jeep tours?+
Cutoffs run from 1 to 17 hours before departure, and 81 of them accept bookings inside 24 hours — so booking the night before is often possible. Popular winter tours sell out days ahead regardless of the cutoff.
Can I cancel a super jeep tour booking?+
98 of 143 (69%) allow free cancellation at least 24 hours before departure. The exact window is on each tour page and comes from the operator's own policy, not ours. If the operator cancels for weather you are refunded in full.
How fit do I need to be for super jeep tours?+
Operators rate them: 80 easy, 44 very easy, 17 moderate, 2 challenging. Iceland's ratings assume weather — an easy walk in still air is a different proposition in 15 m/s of wind.
Is there a minimum age for super jeep tours?+
47 of the 143 set one, ranging from 1 to 14 years. The rest have no stated minimum, which usually means infants are allowed but not that the tour suits them.
Are super jeep tours suitable for children?+
102 of 143 are marked family-friendly by the operator. That is their judgement rather than ours, and it usually means the walking is short and the vehicle has a toilet.
Are any super jeep tours accessible?+
Operators have flagged accessibility on some: 4 for prams and strollers, 2 for limited mobility, 1 for wheelchair users. Ring us before booking rather than relying on the flag alone — Icelandic sites vary enormously and a flag does not describe the terrain at the stop.
What is included in super jeep tours?+
Varies by operator. Across these: wi-fi on board on 14, fuel surcharge on 7, parking fees on 7, national park entrance fee on 6, admission fees on 6. Anything not listed as included is not included — Icelandic operators are literal about this.
Are super jeep tours guided, and in what language?+
97 of 143 are guided in person, with guiding offered in English, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Polish, Spanish. English is standard on every shared departure in Iceland; other languages usually mean a private guide.
Where do super jeep tours start from?+
They start from Capital Region (Reykjavík), Borgarfjörður (Húsafell), South Coast (Hella, Hvolsvöllur, Vík), Vatnajökull (Skaftafell, Höfn), Akureyri & the North, Westfjords (Ísafjörður, Hólmavík) and 3 more. Where a tour starts matters more in Iceland than how long it lasts: the same tour from Reykjavík and from Vík are different days entirely.
What happens to super jeep tours in bad weather?+
The operator cancels and refunds you in full — Icelandic operators cancel readily, and that is a good sign rather than a bad one. What they will not do is refund you for a tour that ran and simply had poor visibility. Wind cancels more tours here than rain or cold.
