About this experience

On this 4x4 tour with an expert guide we head off from your pick up location in North Iceland, usually Akureyri or Lake Myvatn and travel though stunning landscapes passing glacial rivers, moutains and lava fields deep into the highlands to visit the amazing Askja volcanic area.
We visit the Hrossborgir explosion crater nd film location of oblivion and Gljúfrasmiður 'canyon builder' Waterfall. We then move on to Herðubreið, a flat top volcano where the beautiful Herðubreiðarlindir Springs are situated at the foot and are considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the wilderness in Iceland. We also visit the otherworldly Drekagil or 'Dragon's Gully'. Of course the highlight of the trip is the magnificant Askja Caldera in the Dyngjufjoll Mountains, it is a 50 km2 subsidence cauldron formed when an eruption caused the roof of the magma chamber in the central volcano to subside. The caldera contains Víti crater where it is sometimes possible to swim in the Summer.

    Amazing experience with Imagine Travel – unforgettable Iceland trip! We had an incredible experience with Imagine Travel during our trip to Iceland. We joined the Northern Lights tour as well as a day trip to Goðafoss, the lava fields, and Hverir – every place was absolutely breathtaking. Our guide, Ármann, was truly outstanding. He is extremely passionate about his work and has deep knowledge of Icelandic history, culture, and local stories. His storytelling made the journey even more special, and his sense of humour – especially the Viking jokes – made us laugh throughout the trip!     We had an unforgettable experience on the Northern Lights tour with Imagine Iceland Travel. Our guide (Norbert) was exceptional—knowledgeable, and genuinely eager to give everyone the best possible chance of seeing the aurora. He shared fascinating insights about the science behind the lights. History of Akureyri all while keeping the atmosphere fun and relaxed One thing I really appreciated was the company’s kind of “second chance” policy: if we didn’t see the Northern Lights on our tour, we were welcome to join again the next night for free. It took all the pressure off and made the whole experience feel even more guest-focused and fair. Norbert went above and beyond—constantly checking weather updates, adjusting our route, and finding the perfect viewing spot. His photography tips were incredibly helpful too, beyond all of this - in my undestanding - he is the only one who offers to take photo of you for free, no other company does this and thanks to him I came home with fantastic photos. Seeing the Northern Lights is magical, but having such a dedicated, friendly, and experienced guide made the night truly special. Super jeeps — questions people ask

What is a super jeep?

A four-wheel-drive truck or van rebuilt for Iceland: raised suspension, huge low-pressure tyres and a snorkel, so it can cross rivers, drive on snow and climb glacier tracks that stop a rental car. Groups are small, usually eight to sixteen people. Super jeeps are how you reach Landmannalaugar in the highlands, ice caves under Mýrdalsjökull and dark northern-lights spots off the main roads. They are pricier than a coach, and rougher.

Is a super jeep northern lights tour better than a bus?

Slightly, for two reasons. A super jeep can leave the tarmac and find darker, more sheltered spots, and with ten people rather than fifty you spend less time waiting at stops. Arctic Adventures' Northern Lights Explorer (/experience/209/) and Northern Lights by 4x4 (/experience/1088067/) are the standard options. The sky is the same either way; a jeep does not make clouds part. If budget matters, a small-group minibus gets you most of the benefit.

When can you take a super jeep to Landmannalaugar?

Late June to September, once the highland roads open. The Landmannalaugar Safari (/experience/341/) is a twelve-hour day from Reykjavík with river crossings, a short hike and a soak in the natural hot river. The rest of the year the road is closed to everything except specially licensed winter expeditions. The dates the F-roads open vary each year with the snow, so if you are booking for June, expect a possible reschedule.

Is a super jeep tour comfortable?

Comfortable enough on the tarmac, bumpy on the rough stuff. That is the point. Expect to be thrown about on lava tracks and river beds, and to sit in a bench seat for several hours. People prone to motion sickness should sit in front and take a tablet. The trade-off is access: you see places coaches cannot go, with a driver-guide who talks to you rather than over a microphone.
