North Iceland: questions people ask

Is Húsavík the best place in Iceland for whale watching?

It is the one we would pick. Skjálfandi Bay draws humpbacks close to shore from May to September, and small boats like Friends of Moby Dick (/experience/752602/) keep groups small and quiet. Akureyri and Dalvík in Eyjafjörður (/experience/10973/, /experience/618325/) are strong alternatives with a more sheltered fjord. Winter trips run but sightings drop. Getting to Húsavík takes a day from Reykjavík, so it works on a Ring Road trip, not as a day out.

How do you get from Reykjavík to Akureyri?

A 45-minute flight from Reykjavík city airport, or about five hours' drive on the Ring Road. Both run all year; the road can close for hours in winter storms. Akureyri is Iceland's second town, small and pleasant, and it is the base for Goðafoss, Mývatn and Húsavík. A two-day whale package (/experience/10281/) combines Reykjavík and Akureyri boats. In winter Akureyri also has Iceland's best ski hill.

What is the Diamond Circle?

North Iceland's answer to the Golden Circle: Goðafoss waterfall, Lake Mývatn with its craters and geothermal fields, Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, and Ásbyrgi canyon, with Húsavík as the whale stop. It is about 250 kilometres of driving and a full day (/experience/758652/). Half-day options from Akureyri cover Mývatn and Goðafoss (/experience/1149722/). It is less crowded than the Golden Circle and, for many, better.

Is Mývatn worth visiting?

Yes. The lake is surrounded by pseudocraters, the Dimmuborgir lava field, the Hverfjall crater you can walk around and the Hverir mud pools that smell of sulphur. Mývatn Nature Baths are the north's version of the Blue Lagoon, with fewer people. The downside in summer is the midges that give the lake its name; a head net in June and July is not a joke. Tours from Akureyri (/experience/755776/) cover it in six hours.

What is the Forest Lagoon?

A geothermal spa above Akureyri, across the fjord from town, opened in 2022 and set among birch trees, which is unusual in Iceland. Two warm pools, a cold plunge, a sauna and a bar. It is smaller and calmer than the Blue Lagoon and a good end to a day at Goðafoss (/experience/1203527/). In winter you soak with snow on the trees and, on a clear night, a chance of the lights.
