Our journey takes us along Eyjafjörður, one of Iceland’s longest fjords, to our first destination, the Goðafoss Waterfall. Known as the "Waterfall of the Gods," Goðafoss holds a pivotal place in Iceland's cultural heritage. Hear the legendary tale of its name as you marvel at the cascading waters and take in the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Next, immerse yourself in the Spirit of Christmas. We will visit the whimsical Christmas House, where the holiday season is alive all year round. Step into the magic of Christmas as you explore this charming destination, surrounded by snow-dusted scenery and the warmth of holiday cheer. Rekindle your inner child and bask in the joy of Iceland’s festive spirit.

The final part of your tour will take you on a serene two-hour ride through the breathtaking Icelandic countryside, aboard a gentle Icelandic horse. As you journey through the winter landscape, you will have the chance to capture stunning photographs of the tranquil scenery.

Horseback riding in winter offers a truly magical experience. With nature at rest and the world hushed in snow, all you will hear is the rhythmic sound of hooves on the soft snow. This peaceful ride allows you to connect with the landscape in a way that’s simply unforgettable. Along the way, our expert guides will share fascinating insights into the unique history and characteristics of the Icelandic horses, enriching your ride with stories of these remarkable animals.

On the return trip, our guide will show you the most interesting places in the town, including the old town and downtown. He will also provide recommendations for your time in Akureyri.

We look forward to having you on board.

Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a forecast the operator judges unsafe. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Fox Adventure ehf decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

We had an amazing experience with Fox Adventure Experience Iceland! Everything from start to finish was well organized, and the tour exceeded our expectations. Our driver and guide, Baldur, was fantastic. He was incredibly knowledgeable, shared interesting facts and stories about the areas we visited, and happily answered everyone’s questions throughout the day. He was friendly, accommodating, and made sure everyone had a great experience. The minibus was spotless, comfortable, and made for a much more enjoyable and personal tour experience. It was easy to relax and take in Iceland’s incredible scenery. I highly recommend Fox Adventure Experience Iceland, especially if you have Baldur as your guide. He truly made the day memorable, and we would absolutely book with them again!

The guide was enthusiastic, patient, and clearly passionate about Iceland’s nature and history. We never felt rushed and had plenty of time to enjoy the incredible scenery and take photos. The small-group atmosphere made the experience even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for a reliable company that truly cares about its guests, I would definitely recommend Fox Adventure. We would happily book with them again!

Amazing experience and excursion. Our guide was very nice, he is the owner of the company. Everything is well organized, before the excursion it was easy to contact and discuss all the details that interested us. There was enough time to enjoy without rush. Great price, much cheaper than on a cruise ship. We were very impressed. We recommend Fox Adventure.

Unforgettable Winter Tour – Professional, Kind, and Fun We spent a winter day in March exploring North Iceland with Baldur, and it honestly felt like traveling with a friend. His knowledge, kindness, and passion for Iceland made every moment special. He shared fascinating stories, provided thoughtful touches like crampons for icy paths, waited patiently while we enjoyed the Mývatn Nature Baths, and even made small detours when something caught our interest. Winter was a magical time to visit — we stood on frozen lakes, had Goðafoss almost to ourselves, explored the “Game of Thrones” cave, and admired breathtaking scenery at every turn. My favorite moment was standing on a hill overlooking the Akureyri fjord. I could have stayed there forever, and Baldur encouraged us to take all the time we needed. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide or a more memorable day. Highly recommended!

Horse riding — questions people ask

Can complete beginners ride Icelandic horses?

Yes, and most people on the tours are beginners. Icelandic horses are small, calm and used to novices, and the one- to two-hour rides on the farm tours (/experience/164615/, /experience/170834/) move at a walk with a taste of tölt, the smooth fifth gait the breed is known for. You get a helmet and a short briefing. If you have ridden before, tell the guide; they will match you to a livelier horse.

Why can't I call it a pony?

Because Icelanders will correct you, politely. The Icelandic horse stands around 13 to 14 hands, pony height elsewhere, but it has been bred as a horse for a thousand years with no outside blood since the settlement. It has five gaits, including tölt and the flying pace. Once a horse leaves Iceland it cannot come back, to protect the herd from disease. Call it a horse; the guides will like you more.

Can I bring my own riding gear to Iceland?

Only if it has been disinfected. Iceland has strict rules to protect its horses from foreign disease: used riding clothing, gloves and boots must be disinfected before entering the country, and used leather tack, saddles and bridles are not allowed at all. The stables provide helmets and rain overalls, so most people bring nothing. Wear long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel if you have them.

Is there a weight limit for horse riding in Iceland?

Yes. Icelandic horses are small, and most stables set a rider weight limit somewhere around 100 to 110 kilograms, sometimes lower for longer rides. The tour page states the exact limit, and stables do enforce it on the day. If you are close to the limit, email us before booking and we will check with the operator. Minimum ages also apply, usually six to eight for a farm ride.
