Whale watching from Akureyri: classic or express?

Take the three-hour classic from €106 for most people. The two-hour RIB is for the keen, and the Goðafoss combo is for when you want a land day too.

Whale watching from Akureyri: classic or express?

The short version

  • Elding's Akureyri Classic is three hours on a covered boat from €106. It is the default choice.
  • The Express is a two-hour RIB with a maximum of 12 passengers, from €183, in thermal overalls.
  • The Lilja tours from Special Tours and Reykjavik Sailors are 2.5 hours from €99 to €106 and sit between the two.
  • None of the boat tours includes hotel pickup. You walk to the harbour.

Book the three-hour classic if you want one sensible whale trip from Akureyri. Book the RIB if you are happy to be cold and wet for a closer look. Eyjafjörður is long and sheltered, so the water is usually calmer than on open-sea trips from Reykjavík. Humpbacks feed in it through the summer. Nobody can promise you one on your day.

Why Akureyri at all

The boats leave from the pier in the town centre. You can walk from most hotels, so a car is not needed. The fjord is a narrow inlet, which means less swell and less time spent sailing out before the watching starts. Our Húsavík or Eyjafjörður guide compares the two towns. This one is for people who have already picked Akureyri and now face a list of six listings.

The classic: the default

Elding’s Akureyri Classic Whale Watching is from €106 and runs about three hours. It is a fast, covered boat with a heated indoor saloon, big windows, blankets and warm overalls on loan, and Wi-Fi. A naturalist narrates in English. The listing includes a “try again for free” offer if you see nothing. Read the terms before you rely on it.

There is no hotel pickup. You go to the harbour yourself. If you have children, or anyone who gets cold easily, this is the boat. You can go outside when you want and come in when you don’t.

The Classic in the Midnight Sun is the same boat at the same €106, on summer evenings. If you are in town in June or early July, the light on the fjord is the better reason to pick it.

The express RIB: closer, colder

Elding’s Akureyri Express Whales & Eyjafjord is from €183 and lasts about two hours. It is a rigid inflatable with room for 12. You wear thermal overalls, neoprene gloves and goggles, and bags stay on shore. The boat is quick and low to the water, so it covers more fjord in less time and sits near the animals.

It costs about 70% more than the classic for an hour less. That is the trade. You pay for being close and for a small group. You also get spray in the face and a bumpy ride. Pregnant women, people with back or neck problems and small children are usually advised against RIBs, so check the age and health notes on the listing. The summer evening version is the Express in the Midnight Sun, from €189.

The Lilja: the cheaper middle

Special Tours sail the Lilja, a fast cruiser with indoor and outdoor seating. Their own Whale Watching from Akureyri is from €106 and takes about 2.5 hours. The same boat is sold by Reykjavik Sailors as Akureyri Whale Watching from €99.

It is the same kind of trip as the classic, half an hour shorter. The listings mention humpback and minke whales. Compare the departure times for your dates, because the cheaper listing is only worth it if it leaves when you want to go.

The Goðafoss combo: a land day with a boat

BusTravel Iceland’s Goðafoss Waterfall & Whale Watching Tour from Akureyri is from €198 and is listed at about seven hours. It pairs Goðafoss and Laufás with a boat trip, with a coach doing the driving. Ask yourself which half you actually care about. The boat part is shorter than a standalone trip. Our Goðafoss guide covers the waterfall if you would rather go separately.

What to expect on the day

Whales are wild. Some days there are several humpbacks and some days there are porpoises and birds. Wind cancels trips. If yours is cancelled, you get a new slot or a refund, and a spare day in town makes that painless. Dress warmly even in July. It is colder on the water than on the pier.

Our honest take

For most people, the Akureyri Classic at €106. It is comfortable, it has the best indoor space, and the fjord does the rest.

If you are fit, warm-blooded and want to be near the water, the Express RIB is the better trip. It is not the right one for small children or anyone with a bad back.

Pick the Lilja if the time suits you and you want to save a few euros. Pick the Goðafoss combo only if you wanted the waterfall anyway. If whales are the whole point, book a boat and nothing else.
