About this experience
Lake Mývatn and the surrounding area are an absolute must if you're exploring the North. First, we'll cruise along the coast of Eyjafjörður, which is actually one of the longest fjords in Iceland. Our first stop is Goðafoss waterfall - seriously, it's one of the most stunning waterfalls you'll ever see. Then we're off to Lake Mývatn, which was formed by a massive lava eruption about 2300 years ago. The whole area is packed with wild volcanic landscapes, lava pillars, and these really cool rootless vents. We'll also check out Grjótagjá cave and make a stop at the steamy hot springs at Hverarönd in Námaskarð. On our way back, we'll swing by the unique lava formations at Dimmuborgir - they're super popular and for good reason. We'll also stop at Skútustaðagígar, which is this awesome area full of pseudocraters. Our last stop is back in Eyjafjörður, where you'll get an amazing view over the fjord to Akureyri - perfect for snapping some photos. If you're up for it, you can also join us for a visit to geothermal springs. At the moment we visit Forest Lagoon until Earth lagoon is reopend again. You'll have about an hour and a half to chill and soak before we head back to town. You can add the admission at checkout. It's going to be an awesome day.

If you choose to visit Forest Lagoon, you will typically have approximately 1.5 hours to enjoy the lagoon, although this may vary depending on docking times. Guests who prefer not to bathe will be transferred to Akureyri earlier, allowing additional time to explore the town at their leisure.

Hogni (Garfield) was incredibly friendly, professional and knowledgeable which made our day really special. The tour ran with only 3 of us so it was a very personal experience and we got to see all of the sights with no one else around. We also stopped for hot dogs for lunch which were really tasty and affordable. We learnt so much about Icelandic culture and got some incredible photos of all of the sights - of which there were far too many to mention. I would highly recommend and would definitely book with Star Travel again.

What a mindblowing experience! Firstly we went to the Forest lagoon and spent such a wonderful time there, relaxing in hot water with pina colada with a forest view. It was snowing while we were there which made the experience even more magical and movie-like. And then the best part of the tour came. We’ve almost lost the hope of seeing Northern lights that night as it was cloudy and other tours were cancelled but our guide was so confident and just knew WHERE to go! After driving for about an hour we saw Aurora!!! We couldn’t believe our eyes. It was so bright and massive, spreading across the whole sky! We were watching this “show” for an hour: it was dancing in the sky and constantly moving and changing its shape. And the observation spot was between snowy mountains, like in a fairy tale. We were literally screaming and jumping out of happiness because it was so stunning and because our dream came true. And this is thanks to our highly experienced and enthusiastic guide. We are so grateful to him!! He’s a magician who found bright Northern lights in a cloudy day! 15.02.2026

THE BEST! No need to look at any other operator! We've traveled around the world and finally had the opportunity to come to Iceland. Boat tours — questions people ask
Where do boat tours leave from in Reykjavík?
The Old Harbour, on Ægisgarður pier, about five minutes' walk from most downtown hotels and ten from Hallgrímskirkja. Elding and Reykjavik Sailors both have ticket offices there. Whale, puffin, sea-angling and northern-lights boats all use the same area. Arrive thirty minutes before departure to check in. The Viðey ferry (/experience/1539/) leaves from the same harbour in summer and from Skarfabakki the rest of the year.
Is the Jökulsárlón boat tour worth it?
Yes, if you are already at the lagoon. A Zodiac gets you among the icebergs and close to the glacier edge in a way the shore cannot, and the combined glacier hike and Zodiac day (/experience/716547/) is the best full day in the southeast. Boats run in the warmer months only; check the tour page for dates. It is not worth a fourteen-hour day trip from Reykjavík just for the boat.
What is the difference between a Zodiac and an amphibian boat at Jökulsárlón?
A Zodiac is a fast rigid inflatable seating around ten, with a guide who can nose it near the glacier face and into iceberg fields; you wear a flotation suit and get a bit wet. The amphibian is a slow duck boat carrying larger groups on a fixed loop. The Zodiac is the better trip and the one we list. It has a minimum age and is bumpier; the tour page has details.
Will a boat tour be cancelled if it is windy?
Quite possibly. Operators cancel whale, puffin and lagoon boats when the wind or swell makes them unsafe or pointless, and Iceland is windy. The decision usually comes the evening before or early on the day, by email or text. You get a full refund or a new date. Book boat trips early in your stay rather than on your last day so a cancellation can be rebooked.
