How many days should I spend in Reykjavík?+
One day for the city, then use it as a base. Most first-time trips work as three to five nights in Reykjavík with day tours to the Golden Circle, the South Coast and out to sea. The city itself is small: Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, the Old Harbour and the main street fit in an afternoon. Longer stays only make sense if you are using the tours; the country is the reason to come.
Can you see the northern lights from Reykjavík?+
Yes, on clear nights with decent activity, from September to April. Walk to Grótta lighthouse at the western tip or the Ægisíða shore, both about twenty minutes from the centre, and face north over the sea. City lights hide a faint aurora, which is why tours drive out. Check the forecast at vedur.is; if the sky is clear and the activity is high, go to Grótta first and save a tour for a marginal night.
Do I need a car in Reykjavík?+
No. The centre is walkable, the city bus is fine for the outer sights and every day tour picks up from hotels or designated bus stops. Parking in the centre is paid and tight. Rent a car only when you leave the city for the countryside, and pick it up the morning you go. Many people do tours from Reykjavík for the first days and then collect a car.
Where do tours pick up in Reykjavík?+
Large coaches cannot enter the old-town streets, so the city has numbered pickup bus stops within a few minutes' walk of every downtown hotel. Your voucher tells you your stop and time; be there five minutes early, because buses do not wait. Hotels outside the centre usually get door pickup. Boat trips do not pick up at all; you walk to the Old Harbour.
What can you do from Reykjavík without leaving the city?+
Whale watching, puffins from May to August and northern-lights cruises from September to April, all from the Old Harbour. A food walk. The Viðey ferry. Indoor options for wet days: Perlan, FlyOver Iceland, the Lava Show, Whales of Iceland and the geothermal pools locals use daily. Sky Lagoon is a short taxi ride. That is a full two days without a bus, if the weather turns.
