About this experience
The Private Reykjavik Beer & Booze Tour brings you to some of the best bars in Reykjavik.
On the tour, you will taste 9 unique Icelandic craft beers from microbreweries all around Iceland. We base our selection of beers on what‘s on tap when you join our tour. You don't have to be a special beer lover to have fun on our tour and maybe you will even be introduced to a beer style you will love.
We are of course happy to cater to your preferences for beer but at the same time encourage you to be adventurous.
Our Reykjavik beer tasting tour is guaranteed to leave you with a warm buzz and with the prices for alcohol like they are in Iceland you can be sure you get value for money by joining our tour.
We will also give you tips on how to save a little bit on drinks while you are here.
At the start of your tour, you will be able to choose between tasting nine unique Icelandic craft beers, or those who are not into beer will not be left out, and have the option of trying some delicious Icelandic gin, vodka, or a few variations of our national drink, Brennivín. If none of those take your fancy, then a glass of wine can certainly be ordered at each place (but it will not be Icelandic, of course as there are not a lot of grapes that grow over here)
The Reykjavik Pub Crawl - Icelandic Beer Tour is your chance to get to know the best Icelandic craft beers for you to enjoy on your trip. Icelandic people have a short, but proud history of making beer (we need to put our lovely, pure glacial water to good use). We will tell you about our history of beer, from the Vikings, right through to the resurgence of microbreweries today. Beer was actually banned in Iceland for 74 years. Thankfully, this is not the case anymore. You’ll learn all about this bizarre story, and our unique drinking culture on the tour.
Our group sizes are small or 12 people max so we are able to chat about anything and everything Icelandic, not just about alcoholic drinks
The tour is the perfect way to kick off your night in Reykjavik or make the most of your stopover. You can even pick our brains for the best places to eat after the tour, or where to party if your night is heading that way.
Skál, my friend. (that’s ‘cheers’ in Icelandic).
All drinks are included in the price of the tour. The legal age to purchase alcohol in Iceland is 20 and therefore we only accept people 20 or older on this tour.
(There are no infants or children allowed on this tour because it’s illegal in Iceland to have a person younger than 20 inside the bar.)
There is a really short walk between the bars but please dress warmly; we are in ICE-land after all.
From Tripadvisor:
„Valur was an incredible guide for the beer tour. He gave great insights into Iceland's beer history, local customs, and the growing Icelandic microbrew scene. He also gave us great recommendations for restaurants to try while in Iceland. Highly recommend this tour for any beer lover.“
„My daughter and I had a wonderful experience on this tour. Our guide, Astor shared a thorough and interesting history of the Beer culture in Iceland. The locations and samples covered the entire spectrum of Icelandic Beers. We even re-visited the locations from the tour because they were so good.“
„We went on the beer tour our first night in Reykjavik and had a great time. It was the perfect way to acclimate to the city and learn so much more than we would have otherwise. We'll definitely do it again if we make it back here.“
„Spent a few hours on the walking beer tour in Reykjavik. Valur was an outstanding guide. Very knowledgeable of the spirit industry in Iceland from ancient brewing to the new explosion of microbrewery beers. I'm not the biggest beer connoisseur and there was such a wide variety to sample, even I enjoyed it. Also had a chance to sample/compare Brennivín and Hvönn...
Lots of history and cultural stories included. I swear I was seeing elves by the end of the tour.
Highly recommended.“
„We had a great time taking a beer tour with Valur last Monday. He took us to several local spots, told us all about the history of beer in Iceland, and introduced us to several tasty local brews. We even found our favorite brew through this tour which we continued ordering the rest of the trip. Definitely worth the money, especially since the flight of beer is about $30 on its own, so take the tour and get plenty of beer plus a knowledgeable guide for your money.“

Petra was an incredible guide. We asked her to show us as much as she could before taking our crazy family of 10 to the airport for our flights to three different cities ! First stop was the beautiful church in downtown Reykjavik that had just opened with an organ recital. Next stop a lovely spot and observation sight overlooking the city by the Pearl. Cold and wet she found us a lovely coffee shop with the best pastries for a welcome mid morning rest next to the sea. Back in the van we drove for a bit before having the opportunity to explore a geothermal field on our way to the airport. A perfect day and ending to our time in Iceland. Petra shared alot of history and information from the perspective of a local which we all appreciated and enjoyed!

Nice walking trip in Reykjavik city centre with our local guide Hrafn, very friendly and knowledgeable. A good introduction to Iceland on the very first day of our 2 weeks road-trip around the island 👍

Food & drink — questions people ask
Is a Reykjavík food walk worth doing?
Yes, on your first or second evening. Three hours through the centre with five or six tastings, lamb soup, fish, skyr, rye bread, the famous hot dog, and a guide who explains what Icelanders actually eat versus the tourist menu. It orients you in the city and shortlists restaurants for the rest of your stay. The combos with whale watching (/experience/834461/) or a northern-lights cruise (/experience/834525/) make a full day.
What food is Iceland known for?
Lamb, raised free on the hills and eaten as soup, roast or smoked as hangikjöt. Fresh fish, cod and arctic char especially, and langoustine in Höfn. Skyr, the thick cultured dairy. Dense rye bread, sometimes baked in geothermal ground. And the hot dog with everything, which is the honest national dish. The fermented shark and sheep's head are for dares, not dinner. Most Icelanders eat them once a year, if that.
Is food expensive in Iceland?
Yes. A main course in a mid-range Reykjavík restaurant costs roughly what a good dinner costs in London or Copenhagen, and alcohol is heavily taxed. Ways to soften it: lunch specials and soup-and-bread deals are good value, supermarket chains like Bónus and Krónan are fine for breakfast and picnics, and tap water is excellent and free everywhere. Tipping is not expected; service is included. A food walk is one of the better-value meals because it covers several places.
Can I get vegetarian or vegan food in Iceland?
In Reykjavík and Akureyri, easily; most restaurants have at least one option and several are fully plant-based. Outside towns, choice thins out to soup and salad, so on long day tours bring your own lunch if the stop is a petrol station grill. Food walks can usually adapt tastings if you tell the operator when booking; use the special requests field or email us. Allergies should always be flagged in advance.
