Your arrival afternoon in Reykjavík is for one thing, and it might be a nap

Food walk, whale watching or bed on the afternoon you land — which one survives a red-eye, which one wastes the day, and the combo we'd actually book.

Your arrival afternoon in Reykjavík is for one thing, and it might be a nap

Every plan starts at Keflavík Airport. Most flights from North America land between 06:00 and 08:00 after a night with no sleep. Most flights from Europe land between 13:00 and 16:00. Either way, by the time you’ve cleared the airport, done the 45-minute transfer and checked in, you have an afternoon and not much else. The temptation is to fill it. The right move depends entirely on what time your body thinks it is.

Option one: the food walk

The Reykjavík Food Walk is a three-hour guided stroll through the centre with stops at five or six places for lamb soup, hot dogs, skyr, fish, ice cream and whatever else the guide has lined up. It’s flat, it’s slow, and the stops are indoors. It doubles as an orientation: by the end you know where Laugavegur is, where the harbour is, and which café to come back to.

We sell it only as a combination. Elding’s Whale Watching and Reykjavík Food Walk (from €230, six hours) pairs a morning whale trip from the Old Harbour with the food walk in the afternoon. That’s a full day, not an arrival afternoon, so hold it for day two if you land late. If you land at 07:00 and feel surprisingly human, it’s the best possible use of a first day, because both halves are gentle and you’re back at the hotel by 17:00.

The downside is the price and the fact that the food walk on its own isn’t something we list. If you want just the walk, book it directly and save the whale half for later.

Option two: whale watching

Boats leave the Old Harbour, five minutes on foot from most downtown hotels, several times a day. A three-hour trip at 13:00 or 14:00 fits a European arrival well. Elding’s Classic Whale Watching (from €103) and Reykjavik Sailors’ Best Value Whale Watching (from €96) are the two we’d choose between, and the difference is small. Both provide overalls, both have a heated cabin, both let you rebook free if nothing is seen.

Here’s the honest problem. Three hours on a boat in Faxaflói, with a cold wind and a rolling swell, is not where you want to be after a sleepless overnight flight. Seasickness is much worse when you’re exhausted, and half the people who feel ill on whale boats are the ones who flew in that morning. If you landed at dawn from the US, do not book the 13:00 boat. If you landed at 14:00 from London after a full night’s sleep, the 17:00 boat in summer is a fine idea.

Option three: sleep, then walk

Unglamorous and usually correct. Check in, sleep two hours with an alarm, then go outside. Walk down to the harbour, along the seafront to Harpa, up to Hallgrímskirkja, back through the centre for dinner. That’s an hour and a half of daylight and fresh air, which resets your body clock better than a tour does, and it costs nothing. Eat early, go to bed at 21:00, and be the only person on the 09:00 tour tomorrow who’s actually awake.

The downside is that it feels like wasting a day. It isn’t. A day with one bad tour in it is the wasted one.

Our honest take

Landed before 09:00 on an overnight flight: sleep two hours, walk the seafront, eat, bed. Book nothing. Landed midday or later from Europe, rested: book a whale trip for 17:00 in summer or 13:00 in winter, either operator, and keep the food walk for another day.

Save the whale and food walk combo for day two, whatever time you land. It’s the best gentle full day in the city, and it’s far better when you can taste the food.
