Geothermal Exhibition: Self-Guided Audio Tour and Entry Ticket — Geothermal Exhibition

Would this be cheaper direct? No — we sell at Geothermal Exhibition's own price and take our commission from them, not from you. What you get here is one checkout across operators, one confirmation, and one place to change or cancel it. If you ever find it cheaper on their own site, tell us and we will match it or explain why we cannot.

About this experience

INCLUDED:

Entrance to the Geothermal Exhibition and a Self-Guided Audio Tour.

Situated inside of the Hellisheiði Power Plant, the Geothermal Exhibition showcases the utilization of geothermal energy in Iceland. The Hellisheiði Power Plant is the largest geothermal plant in Iceland, owned and operated by ON Power. Here we produce electricity for Iceland's national grid and hot water for the capital region.

Learn about the production and distribution of the plant, Iceland's geology, geothermal activity, and the different innovation projects happening in and around the power plant. Visitors can also see inside of the turbine halls of the plant and feel the power from the steam turbines as they produce electricity. From our viewing platforms, pipe systems, steam regulators, separation tanks, and cooling towers can be seen.

Iceland's usage of geothermal resources is a fantastic example of how geothermal energy can be utilized in a sustainable manner, and is a showcase for the role that geothermal energy can play in a renewable and sustainable future.

We are situated 25 km from Reykjavík, and are on the way to both the Golden Circle and South Iceland.

Opening Hours:

The exhibition is open every day from 09:00-16:00 November-March, and from 9:00-17:00 from April-October. Please direct any inquires to syning@or.is Tel: (+354) 591-2880.

Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until departure. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a forecast the operator judges unsafe. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Geothermal Exhibition decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 0 hours before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Quick 40 min visit on a tour. Excellent exhibition. I was not that informed around geothermal capture until here. Now I know 90% of Iceland has heating from this process and its a pure 100% renewable country (100% electricity from renewables). Exhibition was well presented and hosts were knowledgeable.

The way which Iceland has harnessed the power of the Earth is really fascinating. This geothermal exhibition which is inside a powerstation is full of very interesting information and visual displays. It also has a small (self serve) cafe with hot and cold drinks and cookies! There is also gift shop area. It costs just £15pp, which for Iceland is very well priced. All of the staff we met were very friendly, helpful and informative. If you are interested in geothermal power, the extraction methods and the science behind it all then this is well worth a visit.

We visited earlier this month and were amazed by the sight of the geothermal plant mushrooming out of the barren Icelandic landscape, with steam billowing from gigantic towers. Although we had only a short time for the exhibition we were glad to stop and learn about Iceland’s remarkable heating network. Even without a guide, Tobba was fantastic and answered all of our questions and helped us to understand the ingenuity and resourcefulness that sets Iceland apart from much of Europe — and how it is that such an inhospitable environment can be harnessed to allow living conditions. Highly recommend if itinerary allows.
