About this experience

Iceland’s story began 18 million years ago, when volcanic eruptions and glaciers first started shaping this island’s dramatic landscape. Today, you can see the results up close by traveling the famous Ring Road (Route 1) a 1,322-kilometer (821-mile) loop that connects Iceland’s major cities and top natural sights in one unforgettable journey. The Ring Road mostly follows the coastline, winding through regions filled with waterfalls, black sand beaches, volcanic deserts, glacier lagoons, and colorful geothermal fields.

As you travel, you’ll experience Iceland’s full spectrum of colors: the black sands of Reynisfjara, the fiery reds at Námaskarð Pass, the blue ice caves of Vatnajökull, and the turquoise waters of glacier lagoons like Jökulsárlón. Highlights along the way include iconic stops such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the dramatic landscapes of the Eastfjords, and the striking Grábrók volcanic crater in the west.

After days spent exploring these geologic wonders, winter nights offer the perfect chance to hunt for the Northern Lights. Iceland’s long, dark nights in winter create ideal conditions for seeing this natural light show, making it a top destination for aurora seekers.

Traveling with a group of adventurous women is a great way to experience all of this together - whether you come solo or with friends, you’ll find a welcoming, friendly environment and plenty of opportunities to make lasting connections as you explore one of the world’s most photogenic winter wonderlands.

Cancellation for this tour

No refund once booked. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a solid cloud forecast — most operators call it by late afternoon and let you rebook on a clearer night free of charge. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Viking Women decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

Who this is not for

  • Not the one to book if your dates might move: this operator does not refund once booked.
  • Not available in summer; the operator runs it roughly September to April.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

I don’t think I have the words to recommend Viking Women Tours with the justice they deserve. Friends and I went for the Eclipse Tour Aug 9-14. Sigrun was our guide for all but 1 day. Hilarious and Witty. Lazer focused and Kind. Knowledgeable and Intriguing. It felt like walking with a legend you’ve not heard of yet but just know the story will be an epic once it’s written. We all adored her. Then we had Saga for our last day. She climbed onto a bus of 16 women who had gotten to know each other very well and would laugh, sing and be silly. She rolled with it like she had been a fly on the wall all week. She gave us an extraordinary last hike, last dinner, last day together. If you are remotely thinking about booking a trip with them, solo or with friends, DO IT!!! Seriously do it, you’ll have a trip that is spectacularly magical

This was an awesome adventure! Iceland is too beautiful to describe! Our guide Sigrun was wonderful, very knowledgeable on Iceland history and told all about Icelandic culture, including the Hidden peoples. She was knowledgeable on the Iceland terrain and definitely knew her way around to show us beautiful sites. I am 73 and completed all the hikes which are optional if you feel you can’t complete. The hotels we stayed in were very accommodating also. Food great too! I definitely would go again. Very positive experience!

I have been on a healing journey and saw the ad for Viking Women Tours in Iceland. I strongly believe stepping out of your comfort zone is how you grow, so I reserved my place without knowing anyone else and I went for it! I was NOT disappointed! Sigrún was not only an amazing and knowledgeable guide, but her own story was something that left me amazed! The women I met and the strength and beauty I saw in each one is exactly what I needed! I came home feeling happy, refreshed, renewed! My only disappointment was that it wasn't long enough ❤️

This 6 day hike was exceptional, from the pre departure support from Viking Women's owner Saga; our guide Kat was awesome, great energy, attention to detail and fun! The trail itself is awesome, magnificent views, fun bunk houses, well supported with transfer of our food and bags etc; all made for a truly great Icelandic experience! Loved it!!

Northern lights — questions people ask

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Iceland?

September to April, when the nights are dark enough. Within that, late September to March gives the longest dark hours, and the equinox months, September and March, often have active skies. There are no lights in June or July; the sky never gets dark. Anyone selling you a June lights tour is selling you a bus ride. Give yourself at least three nights, because clouds, not the aurora, are the usual reason people miss them.

Are the northern lights guaranteed on a tour?

No. Nobody can promise them, and we will not. Two things have to line up: a clear sky and solar activity. Guides check the cloud forecast at vedur.is and drive to gaps, which is the real value of a tour over standing outside your hotel. What most operators do promise is a free second attempt if the lights do not show. Check the exact retry policy on the tour page, because the number of retries and the validity period vary.

Is a northern lights bus tour or a boat tour better?

Bus, if you want the best odds. A minibus can drive an hour inland to find a clear patch; a boat stays in Faxaflói and sees whatever sky is over Reykjavík. Boats are shorter, about two hours, and pleasant with hot chocolate, and Reykjavik Sailors' cruise (/experience/6637/) includes a free retry. For a serious hunt, a small-group minibus like BusTravel's (/experience/150646/) or a 4x4 tour (/experience/1088067/) is the better bet.

Can I see the northern lights from Reykjavík itself?

Yes, on strong nights. The city is small and the sky over the sea to the north is fairly dark. Grótta lighthouse at the western tip and the Ægisíða shoreline are the usual spots, twenty minutes' walk from the centre. On average nights the street lights drown out a faint aurora, which is why tours drive out. If the forecast shows high activity and clear sky, walk to Grótta first and save the tour money.
