About this experience

Discover the charm of Hafnarfjörður on a guided walking tour through one of Iceland’s most historic port towns. Known as the “Town of Lava and Elves,” Hafnarfjörður is a place where folklore and history blend seamlessly. Stroll through its colorful streets, visit local landmarks, and learn about the town’s unique heritage as a fishing hub, cultural center, and home to mythical hidden people.

Hafnarfjörður is Iceland’s third-largest town, with around 32,500 residents from 92 countries. It became a municipality on June 1, 1908, making it 116 years old. The oldest resident is 106, and the youngest was just born. Around 25 new Hafnarfjörður residents are born each month, each receiving a gift from the town—beautiful clothing inspired by the sea, the stream, and lava, books to encourage reading, and a teddy bear for warm hugs.

Residents under 18 and over 67 receive wellness grants, as Hafnarfjörður is a health-focused town. It is known for its friendly atmosphere and strong emphasis on warmth and a homely feel, despite rapid growth and development.

The town has a vibrant cultural life, cozy cafés, and distinctive restaurants where owners often provide personal service. Hafnarfjörður is especially known for its charming town center, harbor area, maritime history, and creative reuse of former fishing buildings into spaces for design, industry, and art.

Natural gems such as Hellisgerði, Víðistaðatún, Hamarskotslækur, and Hamarinn are all within walking distance of the town center. During Advent, Hafnarfjörður transforms into a true Christmas Town, offering a relaxed and heartwarming holiday atmosphere filled with gentle lights, music, festive shopping, culture, surprise events, and fresh sea air.

A traditional Christmas route winds through the town center, blending experiences, entertainment, outdoor activities, shopping, dining, and culture. At its heart is the Hafnarfjörður Christmas Village, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors each year. Hellisgerði becomes a glowing fairyland, visitors can go ice skating, visit museums, or relax in local swimming pools. All town museums are free, and pools are free for children and seniors.

Everyone is warmly welcome home to Hafnarfjörður.

Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a forecast the operator judges unsafe. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Your Friend in Reykjavik decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Petra was an incredible guide. We asked her to show us as much as she could before taking our crazy family of 10 to the airport for our flights to three different cities ! First stop was the beautiful church in downtown Reykjavik that had just opened with an organ recital. Next stop a lovely spot and observation sight overlooking the city by the Pearl. Cold and wet she found us a lovely coffee shop with the best pastries for a welcome mid morning rest next to the sea. Back in the van we drove for a bit before having the opportunity to explore a geothermal field on our way to the airport. A perfect day and ending to our time in Iceland. Petra shared alot of history and information from the perspective of a local which we all appreciated and enjoyed!

Nice walking trip in Reykjavik city centre with our local guide Hrafn, very friendly and knowledgeable. A good introduction to Iceland on the very first day of our 2 weeks road-trip around the island 👍
