Private 2-day tour in Iceland: what it costs

A private 2-day Golden Circle and South Coast tour costs about €2,900 to €3,500 for the vehicle. Here is what that buys and when a rental car is cheaper.

Private 2-day tour in Iceland: what it costs

The short version

  • Private 2-day Golden Circle and South Coast tours start at €2,907 (Skall Ventures) and €3,356 (Your Friend in Reykjavik).
  • The winter 2-day South Coast tour with Jökulsárlón and a blue ice cave is €3,496, with a night's accommodation and breakfast included.
  • A 3-day private tour from Reykjavík is €4,195, so the third day costs about €840 more.
  • These are prices for the booking, not per person. Check the group size on the tour page before comparing.

A private 2-day tour from Reykjavík costs roughly €2,900 to €3,500. The 3-day version is about €4,200. Those are large numbers, and they only make sense if you split them across a group or if a driver and guide are worth real money to you. For two people on a budget, a rental car is cheaper. For a family of five who do not want to drive in winter, it can be a fair deal.

What the four tours are

2-Day Golden Circle & South Coast Private Tour (from €2,907, Skall Ventures) is the cheapest way in. It is a flexible private day-and-a-bit: Golden Circle on one day, the South Coast on the other, with the stops decided with your guide.

2 Days in Iceland – Golden Circle & The South Coast (from €3,356, Your Friend in Reykjavik) covers the same ground and is described by the operator as customisable. The extra €450 or so over the first tour is a different operator, not a different route. Ask what is in the price before you pay it.

Private 2-Day South Coast & Blue Ice Cave Tour (from €3,496, Skall Ventures) is a winter product. It goes as far as Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach, includes a blue ice cave visit and an overnight stay with breakfast. It is the only one of the four that reaches the glacier lagoon.

3 Days in Iceland – Reykjavik, Golden Circle & South Coast (from €4,195, Your Friend in Reykjavik) adds a day in and around Reykjavík to the two-day loop.

Why it costs so much

You are paying for a guide-driver and a vehicle for two full days, and for the guide’s overnight where the tour includes one. Iceland has high labour costs, and private tours are priced to match. The price is for the booking, not for each guest, so the number falls quickly as the group grows. At four people, the €2,907 tour is about €730 each. At two, it is about €1,450 each.

What you get for the money

Time and flexibility. You stop where you like, leave when the weather says so, and skip anything that is not worth it. A set bus tour cannot do that. You also get a guide who can answer questions for two days. In winter you get someone else doing the driving on icy roads.

You do not get more of Iceland. Two days is two days. The Golden Circle is about 230 km round trip from Reykjavík and the South Coast to Vík is about 180 km each way. Jökulsárlón is roughly 380 km one way, which is why the blue ice cave tour needs a night away.

When a rental car wins

Two people in summer, comfortable driving, no glacier hike planned. A small car for two days is a fraction of €2,900, even with fuel and insurance. You can add a guided glacier hike or similar for around €118 and still be well ahead.

When private wins

A group of four to six who would otherwise need two cars. Anyone travelling with older parents or small children. Winter visits when you do not want to drive the South Coast in the dark. And anyone who has only two days and does not want to spend one of them navigating.

Our honest take

For most couples, skip it. Book the Golden Circle and South Coast as two separate small-group days and keep the other €2,500.

For a group of four or more, the €2,907 Skall Ventures tour is the sensible starting point. Ask the operator about the group size it is priced for, and what happens if you want a third person’s pickup from a different hotel. If you are going in winter and want the ice cave, the €3,496 version is the one to price against a rental car plus a separate ice cave tour. Check that against the dates you want, because the availability is seasonal.

Do not pay €3,356 for the Your Friend in Reykjavik version unless it offers something you specifically need.
