South Coast: questions people ask

How far is the South Coast from Reykjavík?

Vík is about 180 kilometres and two and a half hours' drive. Seljalandsfoss is around an hour and a half, Skógafoss two hours, Reynisfjara beach two and a half. That is why South Coast day tours run ten to fourteen hours: you spend five hours on the road for four hours of stops. It is still the best day trip from the city. If you can, sleep near Vík and see it at your own pace.

Is Reynisfjara black sand beach dangerous?

Yes. Reynisfjara has sneaker waves that run far up the beach without warning and have pulled people into the sea. There are no sandbars to stop them. Stay well back from the waterline, never turn your back on the ocean, and obey the coloured warning lights at the car park. Guides on tours enforce a safe distance. The basalt columns and Reynisdrangar sea stacks are worth the visit; a wet foot is not.

Which South Coast tour is best?

A small-group one that stops at Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Sólheimajökull and Reynisfjara, around ten hours. BusTravel's small-group tour (/experience/150541/) and Arctic Adventures' South Shore Adventure (/experience/624878/) do exactly that. Add a glacier hike (/experience/5821/) if you want to walk on Sólheimajökull, at the cost of a longer day. The plane wreck tour (/experience/166370/) adds a four-kilometre walk each way across flat gravel; know that before you book it.

Can you visit the South Coast in winter?

Yes, and the waterfalls with ice around them are a good reason to. Daylight is the limit: December tours leave in the dark and return in the dark, with five or six hours of light in between. Roads are ploughed but can close in storms, so keep a spare day. Wear crampons or grippy boots at Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, where the spray freezes on the path. The Katla ice cave (/experience/22559/) is the winter bonus.
