Glacier Rush – Fast pace snowmobile - SnoMo Glacier rush one hour — Mountaineers of Iceland

Would this be cheaper direct? No — we sell at Mountaineers of Iceland's own price and take our commission from them, not from you. If you ever find it cheaper on their own site, tell us and we will match it or explain why we cannot.

About this experience

For the Rush Seeking Traveler.
Mountaineers "SnoMo" trips are suited for those that have some recreational vehicle experience. You will be provided with a powerful Yamaha Viper snowmobile, a three-cylinder 1000cc machine with approximately 140 horsepower. These snowmobiles have more than double the displacement that we offer in our other non SnoMo tours. These performance snowmobiles are single seated mountain machine monsters capable of literally all snowy terrains.

More Private
We do not operate the glacier rush tours with our regular tours and therefore, you will be able to travel faster, further and experience more. Our professional guides will tailor your trip according to weather and terrain and you will experience the glacier-like the locals do on their own performance machines. This tour is the true glacier rush.
Our friendly and fun-loving guides will give you instructions on how to operate the snowmobile and go over the safety procedures before you set off into the winter wonderland. For this tour, we only use our most skillful and professional guides.

Please Note
We cannot accommodate two passengers per snowmobile in these tours since the Yamaha Viper snowmobiles are single-riders only.
Mountaineers can tailor all SnoMo trips to suit your needs and aspirations and can be offered as long-lasting custom tours for 2-4 hours. Please contact us to deliver your heart’s desires.
A direct drive from Reykjavík to Gullfoss takes about 2 hours.
The ride on the monster truck is an adventure of its own, so enjoy the moods of Mountaineers.

Where you go

  1. Glacier Rush - Performance snowmobiling

Included

Your own Yamaha Viper M-TX for the hour, warm overalls, gloves, a buff, overshoes and a helmet.

Good to know

We recommend that you bring warm & windproof clothing in addition to good, waterproof hiking boots and a camera.
Please included your mobile phone number in the booking and e-mail, so we can reach you easily if any changes need to be made. It is important to understand that while in Iceland you could experience all weather conditions in less than one day so tours might have to be altered accordingly. It is vital to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing to be able to enjoy the excursions to the fullest. Best is to dress in layers, wind proof/ water resistance clothing in addition to good, sturdy shoes should do the trick. Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a whiteout or too little snow on the approach track — decided the evening before or on the morning. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Mountaineers of Iceland decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Why this one and not the cheaper one?

The nearest cheaper South Coast & Solheimajokull Glacier Hike From Reykjavik from Gravel Travel is €190 — €211 less. Here is every difference we can actually measure.

Mountaineers of Iceland · €401Gravel Travel · €190
How long it runs4 hours10 hours

On everything we can measure, the Gravel Travel tour is the better buy. The €211 is not buying anything we can point to, so unless you want this operator in particular, take the cheaper one.

Sold out on your date?

Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.

Who this is not for

  • Not for families with children under 18 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

Why we list it

Mountaineers of Iceland was honestly one of the highlights of my trip. The snowmobiling tour was SO much fun and exactly the kind of adventure I was hoping for. I will be totally honest — but no shade to Mountaineers of Iceland — the actual views were trash because it was snowing the entire time and visibility was terrible. 😂 But the view of Lucas leading the tour? Pristine. Hahaha. Lucas was an awesome guide and once he opened it up and picked up the pace a bit, I was lowkey proud that we kept up riding behind him. Mostly because I was fully committed to NOT tipping over like some of the other people out there and because I absolutely did not want to hear my friend roast me for the rest of the trip. 😂 Meanwhile I’m over here aggressively wiping snow off my visor every 12 seconds like I was fighting for my life in an Icelandic blizzard. In reality, I was completely fine — just being extra. Seriously though, such a fun experience and absolutely worth it. I had an amazing time.

A truly professional team. The instructors was great, the vehicles were brand new and reliable. We encountered challenging and pretty dangerous weather while leaving the mountain, but Johan, our driver was incredible— He remained calm and navigated us safely down the mountain under very difficult conditions and hard visibility.

This was our Basecamp where we met out other guides that kitted us up with protective gear and gave us a tutorial in using the snowmobile. Honestly, the Golden Circle tour was amazing.......but snowmobiling on top of a Glacier was DOPE!!!!!

Snowmobiling — questions people ask

Can you go snowmobiling in Iceland in summer?

Yes. Snowmobile tours run on Langjökull glacier all year because there is always snow on top. Tours leave from the Geysir area near Gullfoss (/experience/9999/), from Húsafell in the west, or from Reykjavík with transport (/experience/2874/). In June to August the snow is softer and the light is long; in winter the surface is firmer and the views are whiter. Both are fine. Weather cancels tours at any time of year.

Do I need a driving licence to drive a snowmobile?

Yes, a full valid driving licence to drive. Passengers do not need one and ride behind the driver. Standard pricing is two people per snowmobile; if you want to drive alone, most tours sell a single-rider supplement, and the tour page lists it. Minimum ages apply for passengers as well as drivers. Bring your physical licence card; a photo on your phone is sometimes refused.

What is included on a snowmobile tour?

The snowmobile, fuel, a helmet, balaclava, insulated overalls, gloves and boots, plus a guide leading the group across the glacier for roughly an hour of riding. Transport up the glacier from base camp in a modified truck is included; transport from Reykjavík is only included on the versions that say so. Bring your own warm base layers, sunglasses and a camera. Lunch is not included unless the page says it is.

Is snowmobiling worth combining with the Golden Circle?

If you have one spare day and want both, yes. The combined tour (/experience/17762/) does Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss then drives you up Langjökull for an hour on the snowmobiles, about ten hours in total. The downside is pace: the Golden Circle stops are shorter than on a plain sightseeing day. If you have two days, do the Golden Circle properly and snowmobile from Geysir on the second.
