Langjökull snowmobile: meet at the glacier or pickup?

Meeting at Húsafell or Gullfoss costs about €245 to €270; a Reykjavík pickup adds €45 to €70 and a long day. Most people should drive or join a bus.

Langjökull snowmobile: meet at the glacier or pickup?

The short version

  • Meeting the operator at the glacier base is the cheapest way in: about €244 at Húsafell, €245 at Gullfoss, €249 from the Geysir area.
  • A Reykjavík pickup costs €310 to €314, and the ride on the ice is the same length.
  • The snowmobile ride itself is short, 1 to 2 hours on the ice. The rest of the price is the transfer and the truck up the glacier.
  • Cheapest per person: drive yourself. Easiest: the Reykjavík departure, which fills a whole day.

Short answer: if you have a car, meet the operator at Húsafell, Gullfoss or Geysir and pay €244 to €249. If you don’t, pay the €310 to €314 for a Reykjavík pickup and treat it as a full day. The ride on the ice is much the same either way.

Langjökull is the second-largest glacier in Iceland and the one the day-trip companies reach from Reykjavík. You never ride the whole way up on a snowmobile. A truck takes you onto the ice, then you ride for an hour or so. What you are choosing is how you reach the truck.

Meet at the glacier

Snowmobile on Langjökull Glacier, meet us in Húsafell from Simply Iceland costs €244 for about two hours. Meet us at Gullfoss from Mountaineers of Iceland is €245 for four hours, and Glacier Snowmobiling from the Geysir area from Arctic Adventures is €249 for four hours. The longer figures include the truck ride and kit, not extra time on the sled.

The downside is the drive. Húsafell is about two hours from Reykjavík, and winter roads there ice over. If you are not confident on snow, the saving is not worth it.

With a pickup

Simply Iceland with pickup is €310. Arctic Adventures from Reykjavík is €314 for a seven-hour day. You pay roughly €65 more than driving yourself. For that you get no parking, no weather decisions, and a driver who knows the road.

The seven hours are mostly driving. Expect about three hours of the day on a bus and perhaps an hour and a half actually on the ice.

Húsafell with the cave

Into The Glacier with snowmobiling from Húsafell is €270 for four and a half hours. It combines the man-made ice tunnel with a ride, so you see inside the glacier and across it. It costs €25 more than the plain Húsafell ride. If you wanted the tunnel anyway, it is the better value. Our Into the Glacier guide covers the tunnel on its own.

Which departure suits which traveller

A couple with a hire car and a spare afternoon: meet at Húsafell, then add Hraunfossar and Deildartunguhver on the way back. A family without a car: the Reykjavík pickup, because the logistics are handled and nobody has to drive in the dark afterwards. A group of four or more: ask about a private departure, since the per-person figure can come down, though the operator sets that price, not us.

Time of year matters too. The ice is rideable most of the year, but the access road is easiest from late spring to early autumn. In deep winter the trucks still go, and daylight is short.

What to know before booking

Tours run in most conditions, but cloud and wind can cancel a departure, and we cannot promise a view. Book early in your trip so you have a spare day. Most operators supply overalls, boots and helmets. You still need your own warm layers and gloves. Check the minimum age on each tour page before you book with children.

If you are deciding between a ride and a walk on the ice, snowmobiling Langjökull against a glacier hike compares the two.

Our honest take

Driving to Húsafell or Gullfoss and meeting the operator is the best value, and the lowest price is about €244. Do it only if you are comfortable on a winter road. Otherwise take the Reykjavík pickup at €310 to €314 and accept that most of the day is a bus ride. If a tunnel is on your list, pick the €270 Húsafell combination and skip the plain ride.
