Our take on this one
Icelandic horses through the Hólmsheiði woods and out among the Rauðhólar pseudocraters, 5,200-year-old red cinder mounds on the edge of the city. Viking Horses cap it at ten riders, start with a riding lesson and finish with coffee and something to eat at the stable. Time in the saddle is an hour and a half to two hours; the whole thing including hotel pickup at 14:00 and drop-off from 17:30 runs three and a half to four hours. Helmet, jacket, rain trousers and gloves are provided — and you may not bring your own used riding gear into Iceland, for disease control. Beginners and experienced riders both. Minimum age eight.
- Book it if
- Beginners who want a real ride rather than a led plod, on a horse with a fifth gear, without leaving Reykjavík.
- Skip it if
- Two hours on a horse leaves most non-riders sore for a day — and under-eights need the private family tour instead.

Cancellation for this tour
Cancelling costs 20% of the price within 2 days of departure. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a forecast the operator judges unsafe. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Viking Horses decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

Why this one and not the cheaper one?
The nearest cheaper Golden Circle & Meet the Icelandic Horses | English Guide + Selected German Departures from Magic Iceland Travel is €86 — €85 less. Here is every difference we can actually measure.
| Viking Horses · €171 | Magic Iceland Travel · €86 | |
|---|---|---|
| How long it runs | 3.5 hours | 8 hours |
| Changing your mind | Not stated | Free until 24 h before |
| How hard it is | Moderate | Easy |
On everything we can measure, the Magic Iceland Travel tour is the better buy. The €85 is not buying anything we can point to, so unless you want this operator in particular, take the cheaper one.
Sold out on your date?

I have had 2 fantastic riding trips with Viking Horses. I did the evening trip and a private trip with my daughter who is 8 years old. Incredibly beautiful nature and nice horses. Special thanks to Sara who was our guide. She set up the trip exactly according to our wishes, great patience. Everything felt safe and fun. I really recommend this.

Viking Horses was the best part of our trip to Iceland, hands down. We were running late because we got the time wrong, but our guide, Anna, was very understanding. The drive from Reykjavik was only 15-20 minutes. They picked horses for us based on our experience level, we rode through the mountains with flowers everywhere, we got to tölt multiple times, and Anna took the most AMAZING photos of each of us. The horses were full of personality, too, just the right balance of spunky and friendly. Everyone in our group of 6 had a great time. Thank you so much Anna, Viggo, and Hercules!

Did an evening tour with Sara. We were picked up from our hotel at stated time. A short ride brought us to the stables. She was very professional and personable. Our tour went through lava fields and forested areas. The horses were lovely and well behaved. We all had a fabulous trip.

It was a wonderful afternoon with Andrea and the whole team. We were picked up right on time at the hotel in a large car. Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome and were able to choose our horses and equipment. We were given a thorough introduction and instruction on the riding program. Then the excursion began with two adults and two children. We started off slowly, picking up the pace a bit at times, but always riding safely. An impressive landscape and breathtaking scenery in the Fields of Lava, including a ride through streams. Upon our return, drinks and homemade cake were served. Great! Then we headed back to the hotel. A highlight of our stay in Iceland!

Horse riding — questions people ask
Can complete beginners ride Icelandic horses?
Yes, and most people on the tours are beginners. Icelandic horses are small, calm and used to novices, and the one- to two-hour rides on the farm tours (/experience/164615/, /experience/170834/) move at a walk with a taste of tölt, the smooth fifth gait the breed is known for. You get a helmet and a short briefing. If you have ridden before, tell the guide; they will match you to a livelier horse.
Why can't I call it a pony?
Because Icelanders will correct you, politely. The Icelandic horse stands around 13 to 14 hands, pony height elsewhere, but it has been bred as a horse for a thousand years with no outside blood since the settlement. It has five gaits, including tölt and the flying pace. Once a horse leaves Iceland it cannot come back, to protect the herd from disease. Call it a horse; the guides will like you more.
Can I bring my own riding gear to Iceland?
Only if it has been disinfected. Iceland has strict rules to protect its horses from foreign disease: used riding clothing, gloves and boots must be disinfected before entering the country, and used leather tack, saddles and bridles are not allowed at all. The stables provide helmets and rain overalls, so most people bring nothing. Wear long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel if you have them.
Is there a weight limit for horse riding in Iceland?
Yes. Icelandic horses are small, and most stables set a rider weight limit somewhere around 100 to 110 kilograms, sometimes lower for longer rides. The tour page states the exact limit, and stables do enforce it on the day. If you are close to the limit, email us before booking and we will check with the operator. Minimum ages also apply, usually six to eight for a farm ride.
