Hornstrandir Panorama — Borea Adventures

Would this be cheaper direct? No — we sell at Borea Adventures's own price and take our commission from them, not from you. What you get here is one checkout across operators, one confirmation, and one place to change or cancel it. If you ever find it cheaper on their own site, tell us and we will match it or explain why we cannot.

Our take on this one

Hornstrandir has had no permanent residents since the early 1950s and there is no road in — a boat from Ísafjörður is the only way, which is what makes this a ten-hour day and what makes it cost €491. You hike a remote part of the peninsula with a guide, then eat a home-cooked dinner in a farmhouse restored from 1921. An arctic fox family has denned in the garden there for years and the cubs are often curious; that is a fact about the place, not a promise about your day. Boat both ways, guide and light snacks are included, and you bring your own lunch. Borea grade it challenging and mean it. One departure, 09:00, minimum age 12.

Book it if
Strong walkers already in the Westfjords who want the emptiest corner of Iceland and have a full day to give it.
Skip it if
€491 and ten hours, graded challenging, with a boat crossing that weather can cancel — a poor bet as the only day you have in Ísafjörður.

About this experience

The Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is a truly special place. At the very north of the Westfjords, it is knocking on the door of the Arctic Circle and has a very ‘out there’ feeling, as the only way to get there is by boat. There have been no permanent residents on the peninsula since the early fifties and so it’s very raw and untouched. This tour is a perfect way to explore Hornstrandir if one day is all you have. We explore a very remote part of the peninsula which includes pristine hiking, breathtaking views and diverse wildlife. To top it off, we have a delicious home cooked dinner in a beautifully restored farmhouse which was originally built in 1921. For years, an Arctic Fox family has had their den in the farmhouse’s backyard and the cubs usually get curious when guests appear.

Why this one and not the cheaper one?

The nearest cheaper Golden Ride – Day tour in Golden Circle area from Íslandshestar is €0 — €491 less. Here is every difference we can actually measure.

The €491 buys you 9 more hours out and clearer cancellation terms. Whether that is worth it is your call — but that is what the difference is.

Sold out on your date?

Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.

Who this is not for

  • Not for families with children under 12 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
  • Not for anyone unsure on their feet or carrying an injury — the operator rates this as physically demanding, and there is no easy version of the day.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

We went on the Highlights of Hornvik trip in June 2026. We loved it! Hiking was challenging - don't expect level trails - rocks, mud, etc. Really felt like got to see a remote area. Guides were excellent. Very knowledgeable and shared all kinds of interesting information about plants, animals, the environment. Did a good job of managing the group. Since the company has their own boat they have some flexibility in terms of getting back in time - we were a little later but it was okay. Excellent day! Very impressed with the company. It was helpful that they provided walking poles if needed.

Fantastic experience. We saw whales on the boat trip there. The hike was easy with little elevation. We managed to see many bird species, seals and of course the highlight the Arctic fox. The fish soup and Icelandic pancakes were delicious! Our guide was also hilarious, patient and made the whole trip a joy.

We did the two night Midnight Sun and Arctic Fox tour and it did not disappoint! First we were dropped off 6 km away from the house and hiked to the house. Our guide Mo, prepared our beds and cooked dinner. The next day we made short hikes up and down the coast looking for Arctic Foxes. The sky at sunset was amazing!! The third day just after breakfast a fox was spotted coming towards the house and came close. We spotted him again later from the kayak as he was laying in the grass near the shore. Everything was great and our guide had so much information on everything from the plants and fox to the history as well. Getting away from everything and unplugging was very relaxing. I can't recommend this tour enough.

We had an amazing time with Borea Adventures on the three day Hornstrandir Traverse trip! Our guide Filip was fantastic!!! The hikes may be long and challenging for some but Filip set a nice pace where we could take in the wildlife, the scenery, and enjoy ourselves along the way. The weather can be unpredictable so always be prepared for being cold and wet (pack some extra layers) but we were lucky and had three days with little to no rain. The base camp is set in a beautiful bay and you're surrounded by all sorts of wildlife - all types of birds and even arctic foxes, too! Filip cooked great meals for us and made sure we all had plenty to eat and were comfortable. I'd highly recommend this trip if you enjoy hiking/camping and want to get off the beaten track in Iceland.
