About this experience

Don't miss out on the chance to join this phenomenal 2-day snowmobiling tour exploring the majestic region of Landmannalaugar, in the Central Highlands of Iceland.

This is the perfect opportunity for adventurers looking to take their trip to the next level, expanding their snowmobiling to include an overnight stay.

This tour is perfectly suited to both experienced riders and beginners wanting to try their hand at the sport for the first time. Throughout the experience, you will be accompanied by an experienced and certified snowmobiling guide who do everything in their power to ensure you get the most out of the activity.

Day 1: Reykjavík – Landmannalaugar area

We depart from Reykjavík in the morning and start heading to the Landmannalaugar area. When we have reached the mountains, our expert snowmobile guide will give you a snowmobile briefing, before we head out on to explore our winter wonderland. We’ll show you how to play safely in the mountain terrain while you explore some amazing sledding areas.
After a few hours of riding we will reach our mountain hut in the Landmannalaugar area, Hrafntinnusker. The hut on Hrafntinnusker, Hoskuldarskali, was built in 1977 at 1027 meters above sea level, the house is geothermally heated the whole year round.
Our hut at Hrafntinnusker is named after obsidian which is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. It is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth.
In our warm and cosy mountain hut our guide will cook a traditional mountain BBQ before we head off to bed and rest for our next snowmobiling day.

Day 2: Landmannalaugar area – Reykjavík

Now the sun has come up and our day continues. After a good breakfast our expert snowmobile guide will lay out the plan for our second day in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the highlands of Iceland. Fjallabak Nature Reserve was established in 1979. The nature reserve is 47.000 hectares and is over 500 meters above sea level. The land is mountainous, sculptured by volcanoes and geothermal activity, covered by lavas, sands, rivers and lakes. So, no worries there is still a lot of treasures to explore in this vast mountainous area.
After a spectacular day of snowmobiling we will start to head on towards our pick-up vehicle, which will drive us to Reykjavík.
We expect to be back in Reykjavík in the evening.

The next day sees yet more snowmobiling around the Highlands of Iceland, discovering untold trails and staggering viewpoints. After this you will be making the return journey back along the South Coast to the capital.

So don't hold off any longer. Hurry now and you too can experience the thrills and chills of snowmobiling in the Central Highlands of Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.

Cancellation for this tour

Cancelling costs 20% of the price within 365 days of departure, rising to 50% within 42 days. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a whiteout or too little snow on the approach track — decided the evening before or on the morning. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Southcoast Adventure decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.

Who this is not for

The super jeep tour in Thorsmörck delivered exactly what was promised and was worth every penny. Our guide, Jakob, was fantastic—super nice, easy to talk to, and he made the hours pass by so quickly. The lunch provided was also delicious. Thank you for a memorable day!

Our tour guide Alejandro took us to experience glaciers in Vík, where we got to hike in the glaciers which was an amazing experience. We got told about how the glaciers move, how a small hole can turn into a big pile of snow, stones and ice. Later on we went on buggy rides where we went off road and drove to Eyjafjallajökull. We drove through fields, stones, snow and ice, we got told “you can get as wet as you want” as we drove through the lakes. Alejandro always made sure we were safe and comfortable, he would turn around to check on us if we got stuck. Waited for us if we lacked behind. And even though we drove through dark fields with very little visibility, we still felt safe. It was a great experience, and Alejandro made the experience even better. I would highly recomend Southcost Adventure.

We did the 5hr buggy buggy tour today, by far the best day in Iceland so far. Alejandro was an absolute amazing guide, seen waterfalls, caves, and a glacier that we would have never seen otherwise. Alejandro also took us on an incredible hike to one of the falls. He’s knowledge of the area was superb. Highly recommended over all the other tours.

Absolute number 1 excursion we have ever done! Our Eyjafjallajökull Snowmobiling Tour with Southcoast Adventures was an absolute highlight of our trip to Iceland—and we travel a lot! We spent about 2 hours on the snowmobiles and covered a huge portion of the glacier. Riding all the way to the top to experience the intense wind and the breathtaking views was unforgettable. Our guides, Ale and Martin, were phenomenal. Ale was incredibly patient and helpful while teaching us how to operate the machines. Even when we managed to tip our snowmobile over, they handled it perfectly. Their attitudes throughout the entire tour were tremendous. This truly felt like a once-in-a-lifetime outing. I cannot recommend this adventure and this team highly enough!

Snowmobiling — questions people ask

Can you go snowmobiling in Iceland in summer?

Yes. Snowmobile tours run on Langjökull glacier all year because there is always snow on top. Tours leave from the Geysir area near Gullfoss (/experience/9999/), from Húsafell in the west, or from Reykjavík with transport (/experience/2874/). In June to August the snow is softer and the light is long; in winter the surface is firmer and the views are whiter. Both are fine. Weather cancels tours at any time of year.

Do I need a driving licence to drive a snowmobile?

Yes, a full valid driving licence to drive. Passengers do not need one and ride behind the driver. Standard pricing is two people per snowmobile; if you want to drive alone, most tours sell a single-rider supplement, and the tour page lists it. Minimum ages apply for passengers as well as drivers. Bring your physical licence card; a photo on your phone is sometimes refused.

What is included on a snowmobile tour?

The snowmobile, fuel, a helmet, balaclava, insulated overalls, gloves and boots, plus a guide leading the group across the glacier for roughly an hour of riding. Transport up the glacier from base camp in a modified truck is included; transport from Reykjavík is only included on the versions that say so. Bring your own warm base layers, sunglasses and a camera. Lunch is not included unless the page says it is.

Is snowmobiling worth combining with the Golden Circle?

If you have one spare day and want both, yes. The combined tour (/experience/17762/) does Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss then drives you up Langjökull for an hour on the snowmobiles, about ten hours in total. The downside is pace: the Golden Circle stops are shorter than on a plain sightseeing day. If you have two days, do the Golden Circle properly and snowmobile from Geysir on the second.
