What 'hotels and transport included' really means on an Iceland package
Multi-day tours bundle the bed, the bus and the guide. What's usually in, what's usually extra, and which BusTravel and Arctic Adventures packages we'd pick.
A multi-day package is the simplest way to see the South Coast and the glacier lagoon without driving. It’s also the product where the headline price hides the most. “Hotels and transport included” is true. It’s also not the whole bill. Here’s how to read one.
What’s in
The bus and the driver-guide, every day, door to door from Reykjavík and back. The overnight accommodation, which on these packages is mid-range country hotels or guesthouses along the route, usually with private bathrooms. Breakfast is normally part of the hotel night. Any activity named in the tour title, such as the ice cave visit on the winter packages, is in the price.
That’s a real saving in effort. You don’t book six hotels on a route where the good ones fill up months ahead, and you don’t drive the Ring Road in the dark.
What’s usually extra
Lunches and dinners. The bus stops somewhere for lunch, often a petrol station café or a small restaurant, and you pay for your own. Dinners at the hotel are your own cost too. Budget accordingly; Icelandic restaurant prices surprise most people.
The single supplement. Package prices are per person sharing a double or twin. Travelling alone means a room to yourself and a supplement on top, and it’s not small. Read the tour page for the figure before you’re surprised at checkout.
Optional activities. If the title says “optional ice cave”, the ice cave is a paid add-on on the day. Glacier hikes, snowmobiling and lagoon entries on some itineraries work the same way. “Included” activities are the ones named without a qualifier.
Airport transfers. Packages start and end in Reykjavík, not at Keflavík. Your arrival day and departure day transfers are separate. Every plan on this site starts at Keflavík Airport for exactly this reason; the package is the middle of the trip, not the whole of it.
The packages we’d actually book
Both operators here have thousands of reviews and do this route daily in winter.
For three days, BusTravel Iceland’s 3 Day Golden Circle, South Coast & Glacier Lagoon Small-Group Tour is €852 and runs on a minibus. Arctic Adventures’ 3 Day Golden Circle, South Coast, Jökulsárlón & Ice Cave is €923 and puts the ice cave in the price rather than as an option. Seventy euros for the cave included is fair; it costs more than that bought separately.
For four days, BusTravel’s 4 Day Golden Circle, South Coast & Snæfellsnes Small-Group Tour is €1,065 and adds the west coast peninsula. That’s a lot of ground in four days and the Snæfellsnes leg is the longest driving day.
For five days, Arctic Adventures’ 5 Day Northern Lights, Golden Circle, South Coast, Jökulsárlón & Ice Cave is €1,420. The “northern lights” in the name means the guides look for them on the evenings when the sky allows. Sightings are possible from September to April. They are not part of what you’re paying for, and no package can make them appear.
Our honest take
Take the three-day Arctic Adventures package if the ice cave is the point of your winter trip; the included cave saves the awkward “do we pay extra today” conversation. Take the BusTravel three-day if you’d rather save the €70 and decide about the cave on the day.
The tradeoff with any package is the pace. Stops are timed, the group moves as one, and you’ll want a day either side in Reykjavík to breathe. Add roughly a third to the headline price for meals and a single supplement if you’re on your own. It’s still less hassle than six hotel bookings and a hire car in January, and if the weather closes a road the operator reroutes rather than you sitting in a lay-by refreshing the forecast.
