2-day or 3-day South Coast ice cave tour from Reykjavík

The short version

  • The 2-day South Coast ice cave tours are €474 (BusTravel Iceland) or €584 (Arctic Adventures), both with a hotel night and breakfast.
  • The 3-day Arctic Adventures tour is €949 and adds the Golden Circle on day one. Food is not included except breakfast.
  • The 4-day BusTravel tour is €943 and adds the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The ice cave is an optional extra on that one.
  • All of these are listed as winter products. Ice caves are a winter activity, so outside that season, look at the 14-hour day tour at €204.

Short answer: for most people the two-day South Coast tour is the right size. It gives you an overnight near Skaftafell, a full day at Jökulsárlón and an ice cave for €474 to €584. Take the three-day tour at €949 only if you also want the Golden Circle and would rather not drive yourself. Take the 14-hour day tour at €204 only if you cannot spare a night.

What the two-day tour is

Two operators run this. BusTravel Iceland’s 2 Day South Coast with Ice Cave is €474. Arctic Adventures’ 2 Day South Coast, Ice Cave, Skaftafell & Jökulsárlón is €584. Both are small-group minibus trips from Reykjavík and both are marked as winter products on our site.

The pattern is the same. Day one runs down Route 1: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara and Vík, then on to a hotel near Skaftafell. Day two starts early for Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach, then the ice cave with a certified guide, and the long drive back. Arctic Adventures include a hotel room with a private bathroom and breakfast. Food otherwise is not included. If the weather does not allow a cave visit, the Arctic Adventures listing offers a glacier hike instead. Minimum age is 6 on the Arctic Adventures tour, with a child fare.

Why the sleep matters

A single day to Jökulsárlón is about 14 hours and roughly 380 km each way. The day tour is €204 and does not include an ice cave. The night in the southeast is the thing you are paying for in the €270 to €380 difference. You are not driving back in the dark after a cave, and you reach the lagoon early, when it is quieter.

The three-day tour

Arctic Adventures’ 3 Day Golden Circle, South Coast, Jökulsárlón & Ice Cave is €949. Day one is Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, then the south coast waterfalls and a hotel at Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Day two is the glacier hike and ice cave at Skaftafell and the lagoon. Day three is the drive back. Minimum age is 8 for children, and cancellation is free until 24 hours before.

This is the sensible choice if you have only four or five days in Iceland, you do not want to drive and you have not done the Golden Circle. It is poor value if you will do the Golden Circle on your own, because you would pay €365 more than the two-day tour for a day you could have for under €100.

The four-day tour

BusTravel Iceland’s 4 Day Golden Circle, South Coast & Snæfellsnes is €943 for three hotel nights. It takes you to Snæfellsnes on the last day. The ice cave is an optional extra, not part of the price, and the cancellation terms are stiffer: free until 365 days before, then 50% within 7 days. It fits a first visit with a week to spare. It does not fit someone whose main goal is the ice cave.

What you give up

You get no choice of cave on any of these. The operator picks it on the day depending on conditions, and ice caves change every winter. Nobody can promise which one you see, or that a cave is safe to enter on a given day. Pickups can take up to 30 minutes in town, and the day-one start is early.

Also read the hotel line. These are rooms with a private bathroom and breakfast, in places like Kirkjubæjarklaustur, so expect a plain countryside hotel and not a lodge.

Our honest take

Book the two-day tour and choose the BusTravel one at €474 if the dates match. The Arctic Adventures tour costs €110 more and its listing is more detailed on what happens if a cave is not possible. Both do the same job.

The three- and four-day versions are good only if you want a guided first week. For two people travelling together, a rental car and two hotel nights usually costs about the same. Our rental car vs guided tours comparison goes through the numbers, and the Jökulsárlón day trip guide covers the one-day option.
