About this experience
Join us for an epic ATV expedition where we take you deep into the untamed wilderness surrounding the city, blending ancient landscapes, with modern speed . Our journey leads through hidden, long-forgotten and hidden valleys and up to the formidable peaks of the Reykjavik hills. From the top, riders can enjoy a magnificent view over the rift valley volcanoes and the Great Capital Area of Reykjavík—the very same "Smoky Bay" named by the first Viking settlers over a millennium ago.
Keep your eyes open. We often spot the sturdy descendants of the original Viking horses or roaming sheep close to the track. Depending on conditions, we will make stops at several scenic locations to take photos and share legendary tales about the local area, the sagas, and Iceland's raw nature.
Tour Details:
- Duration: Approximately 2 hours riding time (3 hours total with pickup and drop-off).
- Group Size: Maximum of 8 people (bookable online). Large groups of up to 20 are available by special request.
Pickup & Location: We offer pickup from most hotels in the Reykjavik area. Please note that the City of Reykjavik has established non-pickup zones in the downtown area to reduce traffic. If you are staying downtown, we will pick you up from the nearest designated Tourist Bus Stop.
- You can find the stop closest to your accommodation at www.busstop.is.
- If you prefer to meet us on location, our basecamp is only a 20-minute drive from downtown Reykjavik.
- Meet on location - Use promo code "MOL" for 10% off the price for "Meet On Location" if you have a car and meet us on location.
Pricing & Requirements:
- Solo vs. Shared: Two people can ride on each quad bike. Prices are per person.
Shared Ride: You must be two participants to book this option.
Solo Ride: If you are a single rider, or if your group has an odd number of people (e.g., 3, 5, 7), you must book at least one Solo Ride. - Age Limit: Children up to 17 years old pay the child rate and ride as passengers with an adult.
- Driving License: A fully valid driving license is required to operate the ATV.

Cancellation for this tour
Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is storm-force wind — rain and mud do not cancel it. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Action Adventures decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Why this one and not the cheaper one?
The nearest cheaper Volcano ATV Tour from Volcano ATV is €107 — €58 less. Here is every difference we can actually measure.
| Action Adventures · €165 | Volcano ATV · €107 | |
|---|---|---|
| How long it runs | 3.5 hours | 1 hour |
| Changing your mind | Free until 24 h before | Not stated |
| How hard it is | Moderate | Easy |
The €58 buys you 2.5 more hours out and free cancellation up to 24 h before. Whether that is worth it is your call — but that is what the difference is.
Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.
Who this is not for

We had the absolute BEST time on our 2 hour ATV Tour!!! The views were stunning (pictures don't do it justice) and our guide was super informative and friendly!! We stopped to feed some horses on our way back (super cool experience) and we lucked out with the weather too! 10/10 for overall experience!! Would 100% recommend this tour!!!

This tour was fantastic. I went with my 3 friends (all of us around 20 years old) on our last day in Iceland as we wanted to do something fun near the Reykjavik. To save some money we shared ATVs and switched turns driving which worked out great. We stopped I think 3 times or so during the ride and the views were great. It was so much fun riding the ATVs and our tour guide was great. He was fun and gave us some info about the places we stopped at. The other group didn’t show, so it was just my friends and I. I would totally recommend.

Absolutely unbelievable experience. Picked up from hotel, taken 15 min out to the base. Got kitted up with everything we needed, hand warmers, gloves, snoods. The guide is so friendly, with a great sense of humour, and very informative too about the local area. Would definitely recommend.

Such a great experience. Our ride was fabulous, our guide was friendly, safe and very knowledgeable. There was just our guide and my family of 4 on 2 ATV’s. We went off the beaten track and had plenty of stops to take decent photos. We would all highly recommend!

ATV & buggy — questions people ask
Where can you ride ATVs in Iceland?
In two very different places on this site. Near Reykjavík, the Hafnarfjörður lava fields, twenty minutes from town, host the ATV combos with caving, horses and whale watching (/experience/292/, /experience/1603/). In the Westfjords, Activity Tours runs one-hour and three-hour rides from Drangsnes and Djúpavík on the Strandir coast (/experience/1176229/, /experience/1167831/), with fjord views and almost no other traffic. The Westfjords rides are better; Reykjavík is easier to reach.
Do I need a driving licence to ride an ATV in Iceland?
Yes, a full valid car licence to drive one. Passengers ride behind the driver and do not need a licence, but minimum ages apply for both; check the tour page. Bring the physical licence card. Standard pricing puts two people on one ATV, with a single-rider supplement if you want your own. Buggies (/experience/7689/) are side-by-side and more car-like, if you are unsure about balancing an ATV.
What do I wear for an ATV tour?
Old clothes and closed shoes. The operator gives you a helmet, overalls, gloves and often a balaclava, because Icelandic tracks are mud in summer and slush in winter and you will get sprayed. Wear warm layers underneath; you are sitting still in the wind. Sunglasses or goggles help with grit. Leave anything white at the hotel. A shower afterwards is not optional.
Is ATV riding in Iceland dangerous?
It carries real risk, which is why the licence rules exist. You ride in a line behind a guide at a set pace on marked tracks, so the danger is mostly in overconfidence on loose gravel or steep sections. Follow the guide's speed and keep your feet on the footrests. Travel insurance that covers motorised activities is worth checking before you book; some standard policies exclude ATVs.
