About this experience

Krýsuvík Geothermal Experience – Private Tour in a Ford Focus RS

This private 3 hour tour combines the thrill of a performance-inspired drive with some of the most striking landscapes near Reykjavík. Following the Krýsuvík route, renowned for its winding mountain roads and geothermal scenery, the journey is designed to showcase both the natural beauty of Iceland and the rally heritage of the Ford Focus RS. Shorter than a full-day excursion, this experience is perfect for travelers with limited time who still want a memorable and dynamic adventure close to the capital.

The Drive

The road through Krýsuvík offers a rare mix of serpentine curves, elevation changes, and open stretches, making it one of the most rewarding short drives in Iceland. From geothermal valleys to volcanic coastlines, the landscape unfolds dramatically, while the Focus RS’s turbocharged power, sport-tuned suspension, and all-wheel drive make the driving experience as captivating as the scenery itself.

Points of Interest

📍 Seltún Geothermal Area – Vibrant geothermal colors, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents provide a close-up view of Iceland’s volcanic energy.

📍 Kleifarvatn Lake – A hauntingly beautiful lake set among volcanic ridges, with stunning photo opportunities along its shoreline.

📍 Krýsuvíkurkirkja – A rare and historic black-timber church, standing solitary in the wild landscape of Krýsuvík.

📍 Krýsuvíkurberg Cliffs (weather dependent, no winter service) – Towering sea cliffs teeming with birdlife, offering dramatic coastal views if conditions allow access.

Seasonal Note

  • Summer: Access to Krýsuvíkurberg cliffs is usually possible, making the route more expansive and diverse.
  • Winter: Due to road conditions and lack of service, the cliffs might be inaccessible in case of a snowfall; the focus instead remains on Seltún, Kleifarvatn, and Krýsuvíkurkirkja, with equally rewarding scenic drives.

The Car – Spirit

The modified Ford Focus RS (Spirit) is the defining feature of this tour. Built with rally DNA, it transforms a short journey into a thrilling experience:

  • Turbocharged engine delivering instant power.
  • All-wheel drive for confident handling on twisting mountain roads.
  • Sport suspension for precise control on variable surfaces.
  • Custom tuning and exhaust that bring excitement to every stretch.
  • Premium, supportive interior for both comfort and immersion.

Note: Spirit has four bookable seats, though it is best suited for three adults and one smaller individual or child, given the car’s compact performance layout.

Why Choose This Tour

  • A shorter experience (3 hours), ideal for busy schedules.
  • Showcases one of Iceland’s most scenic routes, just outside Reykjavík.
  • Combines geothermal wonders, volcanic lakes, and dramatic coastlines.
  • A chance to travel in a rare, rally-inspired performance car.
  • Perfect for layovers or short stays, with close proximity to Keflavík International Airport.
  • Seasonal flexibility, with summer access to Krýsuvíkurberg for coastal views.

This is not a standard sightseeing drive—it is a carefully curated experience where the road itself is the highlight, enhanced by natural wonders that make Krýsuvík one of Iceland’s most unique areas to explore.

The driver was super friendly and clearly knows his stuff, which made it even better. It felt safe but still gave that real racing thrill. Totally worth it if you’re into cars or just want to try something different while in Iceland.

I met Daniel earlier in the day on another tour. However, later I needed a ride from the Blue Lagoon to a hotel in Reykjavik with all my luggage. He offered to pick me up in his race car taxi, and I had no idea what to expect. I messaged him from the lagoon to agree on a pick up time. After that, it became a bit surreal... he picked me up right on time in a beautiful blue race car. It was the most fun “taxi" ride l've ever had. In addition, Daniel is an amazing tour guide and took time to show me the sights and tell me about Iceland along the way. Whether you need a tour, a ride to the airport, or want to hunt for the northern lights with one of the most knowledgeable hunters in the field, just call Daniel. You will not regret.
