Our take on this one

Freediving Silfra rather than snorkelling it means going down into the fissure instead of floating over it, on one breath, in a wetsuit rather than a drysuit. Freedive Iceland run it in three to four hours in Þingvellir national park, with a changing van, park fees and the gear included, and no certification asked for. Visibility in the glacial meltwater is usually over 100 metres, which is the whole point. It is colder than the drysuit version and you will feel it — bring warm clothes for afterwards, and a swimsuit and towel. Minimum age 12, and you must be able to swim and be comfortable putting your face in cold water. Three start times: 09:30, 10:00 and 12:00.

Book it if
Confident swimmers who want the fissure properly, not the surface view, and don't mind being cold to get it.
Skip it if
If cold water makes you panic, or you want to stay dry and warm, take the drysuit snorkel instead — this one asks more of you for the same water.

Cancellation for this tour

Cancelling costs 50% of the price within 2 days of departure. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is rarely: Silfra is spring-fed and sheltered, but access can close in a storm. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Freedive Iceland decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

My friend and I did a dive recently with freedive and it was the absolute best! Bjarni was an amazing guide, made us feel reassured about the cold and excited for the swim. We highly recommend going with them because of the use of wetsuits. You actually stay quite warm, and possibly even warmer than a dry suit because of how the water circulates around your body. Our hands and toes got a little cold but that's be expected. Being able to dive down and swim around made it super worth it. Really cool experience!

I really recommend this experience. Birgir is really an excellent guide and also funny. The equipment is good quality and I didn't feel cold at all.

We loved our snorkeling tour with Freedive. We did a private tour (2 of us plus the guide) and had the perfect amount of education and viewing. The water is extremely cold but our wetsuits kept us warmer than we expected. Your face will go numb though! The water is totally clear and you can see through to the bottom. It’s a surreal experience being between the tectonic plates. Definitely don’t miss Little Silfra in the lagoon area too.

Amazing experience, diving in the freezing crystal waters of Silfra. We are a family of four, with tweenager boys and everybody enjoyed it so much! The wetsuit was comfortable and kepts us surprisingly warm, the only thing we had to deal with was the freezing water on our face which was exposed, but you get used to it in a while. Both instructors were friendly, explanative and supportive throughout the whole tour. We were dressed/undressed in a warm van, and in the end we were offeres hot cocoa and chocolate. If you are in Silfra it's an experience you can't miss.

Silfra snorkelling & diving — questions people ask

How cold is the water at Silfra?

Two to four degrees Celsius, all year. It is glacial meltwater filtered through lava for decades, which is why visibility runs to a hundred metres. You wear a dry suit over a thermal undersuit, so your body stays dry and warm. Your face, lips and hands are the parts that feel it, and after thirty to forty minutes in the water most people are ready to get out. Hot chocolate afterwards is standard.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel Silfra?

No, but you must be comfortable in water. The dry suit floats you, so you drift along the fissure with a gentle current doing most of the work. You do need to be able to swim, and operators set minimum age, height and weight limits and ask about medical conditions on a form. Check the tour page for the current limits before booking. Glasses cannot be worn under the mask; contact lenses are fine.

Is Silfra snorkelling worth it in winter?

Yes. The water is the same temperature in January as in July, and the visibility is the same. What changes is the air: getting into and out of the suit at minus five with wind is unpleasant, and daylight limits the departure times. Fewer people snorkel in winter, so the fissure is quieter. If you are here between November and February and want it, book the earliest slot for the best light.

Can I dive Silfra without a dry suit certification?

Not on a standard dive tour. Operators require a dry suit certification or a logged number of dry-suit dives within the last two years, plus an open-water certificate. If you have neither, the two-day PADI dry suit course with a Silfra dive (/experience/19038/) gets you certified and in the fissure. Snorkelling (/experience/208/) has no certification requirement and shows you the same rock walls from the surface. Most people are happy with snorkelling.
