About this experience
This tour has it all: magical blue ice cave, glacier hike and super jeep ride. All of that in incredible surroundings of the glacier lagoon and biggest glacier in Europe. During this tour we will take you into the remote ice cave in the Vatnajokull icecap. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of Blue Ice Cave and see intense, beautiful blue color inside.
Complete tour takes about 6-7 hours and requires some level of fitness. During this tour we will meet at the Glacier Lagoon and drive in a Super Jeep for about half an hour to starting point of a hike. From there we will walk about 1-1,5 hour to the ice cave. The hike leads through rocky and uneven terrain of glacial moraine and also on the glacier. We will provide all necessary glacier equipment. All you need to have are good hiking clothes (fleece, waterproof jacket, hat, gloves), boots with ankle support, water bottle, lunch and of course a camera.
It’s a must see for all photography enthusiasts.

Cancellation for this tour
Free cancellation until departure. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is melt-water or unstable ice after a warm spell — the guide decides on the morning, and a cave can close for days. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Blue Iceland decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 0 hours before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Why this one and not the cheaper one?
The nearest cheaper Perlan Ice Cave, Northern Lights Planetarium & Golden Circle Tour from BusTravel Iceland is €107 — €135 less. Here is every difference we can actually measure.
| Blue Iceland · €242 | BusTravel Iceland · €107 | |
|---|---|---|
| How long it runs | 6 hours | 10 hours |
| Getting there | You make your own way | Picks you up |
| Changing your mind | Free until departure | Free until 24 h before |
| How hard it is | Moderate | Very easy |
On everything we can measure, the BusTravel Iceland tour is the better buy. The €135 is not buying anything we can point to, so unless you want this operator in particular, take the cheaper one.
Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.
Who this is not for
- Not for families with children under 14 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
- Not available in summer; the operator runs it roughly September to April.
Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

CHOOSE BLUE ICELAND! We went on a glacier/ice cave tour with Oscar and Maggie (?). Oscar led our group. He was a very knowledgeable and safety- conscious guide. I was enthralled by all that he shared about the glacier and Iceland. I can't recommend a better guide! He was patient and made sure we were safe the entire time, even though the weather made it seem like we were on a trek across the Arctic. And, he managed to find half a dozen ice caves, even though it was near white-out conditions. We had to wrap the tour up early, and had some challenges getting back to the lagoon, but Maggie was reassuring and I had confidence in their ability to lead us back safely. Once back at the lagoon, they told us that all the roads were closed and asked everyone to follow them to a farm not far away, where we could get hot food and wait for the roads to open. The weather got worse and everyone managed to find a place to stay for the night (two hotels on the farm) to wait out the storm. This company is caring, kind and not just about making money from tourists. They showed us the best side of Iceland and those who live in this amazing country. If you are in doubt about what company to choose, choose this one!

*5 stars for 3 hours hike Summer Treasure - Glacier Discovery - with our guide LUCY* Really great hike with Lucy - only 9 people in our group, from Jokulsarlon on Vatnojokull glacier. It is a 30 minute ride to the glacier, then you put on your microspikes. Not many people on this glacier (Compared to Solheimajokul glacier which was VERY busy). We got to go into some crevices, as well as peer down some of the holes (harnessed). Nice hike and experience also for my 9--year old. Next time, would like to try the 6 hour hike. Note: the meeting point at the busy Jokulsarlon meeting area is not at the cafe...you have to go to the Bus parking lot, and find a truck that is labelled Blue Iceland - you meet at the bus.

This tour was absolutely awe inspiring. It was a once in a lifetime experience. We did the long day glacier hike and cave. Definitely worth it. Got a great 10% discount by staying in guesthouse Gerdi. The guide was really knowledgeable and taught us loads about the glacier and the characteristics of the area. The gear we got was top quality. Be sure to dress well though as its very cold in winter. The guide took loads of photos too which he sent afterwards. I would 100% would recommend this company.

This tour was amazing!! We got to see a bunch of the ice caves on top of the glacier! We went into a huge monster truck and traveled over bumpy off beat roads to arrive at the glacier. Then they gave us ice spikes for our shoes. The whole experience was so exciting and unique and we got to explore the beautiful caves! And our tour guide was very nice. Highly recommended tour while in Iceland!

- Boat tours in Iceland sort into five kinds, and only two of them are sightseeingWhale boats, aurora cruises, glacier-lagoon zodiacs, island ferries and sea angling. What each one actually is, what it costs, and which are worth a slot.

Ice caves — questions people ask
When can you visit an ice cave in Iceland?
Natural blue ice caves open from around November to March, when the glacier is cold enough for the meltwater tunnels to be safe. They form under Vatnajökull near Jökulsárlón, and the caves change every year. Two exceptions run all year: the Katla ice cave near Vík, which is dark ice striped with ash, and Into the Glacier at Langjökull, a man-made tunnel. If you want the glowing blue photos, come between November and March.
Can I do an ice cave tour as a day trip from Reykjavík?
Only the Katla cave. The South Coast and Katla ice cave tour (/experience/22559/) is about twelve hours from Reykjavík and back. The blue caves at Vatnajökull are five hours' drive each way, too far for a day, so operators sell them as two- or three-day tours (/experience/6131/, /experience/7358/) with a night near Jökulsárlón. If you are self-driving, stay in the Höfn or Skaftafell area and book the Crystal Ice Cave tour (/experience/17337/) from there.
Is the Katla ice cave as good as the blue ice caves?
Different, not worse. Katla's cave under Mýrdalsjökull is black and white, layered with volcanic ash, and open all year. It will not give you the glowing blue tunnel photos from Instagram; those are the Vatnajökull caves, November to March only. What Katla gives you is a shorter super-jeep drive from Vík (/experience/22558/) and availability in summer. If you are here between November and March and can reach Jökulsárlón, choose blue. Otherwise choose Katla.
Are ice caves safe?
With a guide, yes. Operators inspect the caves daily and cancel when meltwater, warm weather or ice movement makes them unsafe, which happens most often in November and March at the edges of the season. You wear a helmet and crampons and stay with the group. Never enter a glacier cave on your own. If your tour is cancelled for safety, you get a full refund or another date, and most operators try to substitute another cave first.
