We start in Landmannalaugar and make our way south through the Highlands. On the way we view fields of obsidian, red and yellow mountains, black sands and sparkling white glaciers. The Laugavegur trail ends in Thorsmörk, a green valley nestled at the foot of the famous glacier Eyjafjallajökull. On this 4 days trek you experience some of the best Icelandic nature has to offer glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields and geothermal colors and hot springs. The track is maintained and your guide will ensure you do not miss the best spots along the way, explain the scenery around you and geological history of Iceland.

- Hiking boots - good sturdy boots with ankle support, robust sole, waterproof
- Thermal underwear (long sleeve top and bottom) made of wool or synthetics (not cotton)
- Wool or fleece thermal mid layer
- Hiking pants (we don't recommend cottons as they take long to dry if wet)
- Hiking socks made of wool or synthetic (at least 2-3 pairs)
- Waterproof and breathable (fabric such as Gore Tex or similar) both pants and jacket (preferably with a hood)
- Gloves and mittens - wool or synthetic (waterproof over gloves/mitts recommended)
- Warm hat and/or balaclava
- HEALTH SUPPLIES AND PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE IF NEEDED
- Day backpack about 25-40 L
- Travel sack for your baggage that is transported between huts. (Suitcases are not recommended, we recommend a waterproof duffel bag)
- River crossing shoes -for example quick drying trail runners, sandals (with straps) or neoprene shoes

Nightly accommodation in mountain huts is included. Huts on the Laugavegur Trail are dormitory-style with shared rooms.
Iceland’s Highlands can change quickly, even in summer. Cold wind, rain, and sudden temperature drops are common, and snow is possible in any month. You’ll spend long hours outdoors, so warm layers and waterproof gear are essential.
Closed-toe shoes are required for river crossings (no flip flops).
There is not access to electricity in the highland huts, so please bring a portable battery to charge devices.
The Laugavegur trail route is not technical, but it does include long hiking days, uneven terrain, and very steep elevation changes. You should be comfortable with 6–10 hours of hiking per day on rocky trails and rough ground, with occasional steep inclines and descents
Your guide organizes the meals, although assistance from participants is appreciated. You will meet people from all over the world – enjoy being part of a friendly team.

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is wind above the treeline and river levels after rain — the guide decides on the day. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Arctic Adventures decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 365 days before departure, the operator's policy after that.

I spent six days on a bus tour around Iceland with a professional guide. I did the Iceland South Coast Full Day Small-Group Tour from Reykjavik. Such an amazing tour and one of the highlights of my trip to Iceland! Our guide, Erik, was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so much interesting information about Iceland throughout the day. We visited some of the country’s most beautiful sights, including stunning waterfalls, Vik, black sand beaches, and other breathtaking stops along the South Coast. The pickup process was simple and organized, making the day completely stress-free. The scenery was incredible from start to finish, and Erik helped make the experience even better with his knowledge, friendliness, and enthusiasm. A Fantastic Trip: Review of 3-Day Golden Circle, Ice Cave and Glacier Lagoon Absolutely incredible experience with Arctic Adventures and the guide Hjalti Bjornsson. The pick up from the bus stop was easy and the instructions were super clear. Be aware that they are extremely punctual at every stop. Do not be late by even a minute. We saw so many sites and the weather was perfect for most of the days. Our guide even took us on some stops that were not in the itinerary, but ones he thought were interesting and on the way, like the power plants and some other glaciers. The bus ride was very smooth with plenty of room and the seats were comfortable. The itinerary was well thought out with a great mix of light walking about 3 - 6 miles per day depending on how much you wanted to walk to each site. Some sites like the glacier Skaftafellsjokull (optional) were further away (4 ish miles), while others were much closer (1000ft). The hotel was situated in a beautiful location with sheep everywhere and interesting rock formations. The hotel was very comfortable with hot water and plenty of space to spread out. Our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgable. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone between the ages 10 - 70. However, this might not be the best experience for those with mobility issues as there is walking to some of the best sites.

When can you hike in Landmannalaugar?
Late June to September. The highland roads to Landmannalaugar are closed by snow the rest of the year, and the opening date shifts with the weather each summer. In season, day tours from Reykjavík (/experience/16823/) run about fourteen hours with a three- to five-hour guided hike and a soak in the hot river. If you have your own 4x4, the meet-on-location hike (/experience/254326/) skips the bus.
How hard is the Laugavegur trek?
Moderate to hard. It is 55 kilometres over four days from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, with river crossings, snow patches in July and weather that can turn to sleet in August. You do not need technical skills, but you need to carry a pack and walk five to eight hours a day. Guided treks (/experience/738812/) handle logistics and camping gear; the luggage transfer (/experience/1036525/) lets self-guided walkers carry a day pack only.
Can you hike to the volcano near Reykjavík?
Yes, when it is safe. The Reykjanes eruption sites at Fagradalsfjall and around Grindavík have drawn hikers since 2021, and guided tours (/experience/629086/, /experience/620679/) follow the routes the Civil Protection authority has open. If there is an active eruption, access changes daily and tours adapt or pause. The lava is usually cooled and crusted; you see fresh black rock and steam, not flowing lava. Wear boots; the ground is rough.
What should I pack for a day hike in Iceland?
Waterproof jacket and trousers, not a poncho; the wind will shred it. Hiking boots with ankle support, wool or synthetic layers, hat, gloves, sunglasses and a packed lunch with two litres of water. In the highlands add a warm mid-layer even in July. Guides carry first aid and route knowledge, not your rain gear. Cotton jeans and trainers are the most common reason people have a miserable day.
