About this experience

Landmannalaugar is one of the hidden gems of Iceland. Most visitors to our shores stick to more easily accessible regions such as the Golden Circle or the southern coastline. Landmannalaugar on the other hand requires special 4x4 vehicles to access. This extra effort is well worth it for the astounding and unique landscapes that await you.

From hiking trails through ancient lava fields and rolling rhyolite hills, bathing in hot-springs to beautiful sites such as Hjálparafoss waterfall and Hnausapollur volcanic crater lake, there is something for everyone on our Landmannalaugar tour. Join us then on our highland bus and visit the beautiful Landmannalaugar.

Háifoss & Granni Waterfalls

We make a stop at these waterfalls both of which drop over 100 meters to the canyon below. Háifoss is the larger both in height and volume and is in fact Iceland´s 4th highest falls. Granni, literally meaning neighbor cascades over a few levels before reaching the bottom.

The falls are the end point of the Fossá river, itself a tributary of the larger Þjórsá river.

The falls are most voluminous is spring when the snow is the valleys above begins the melt.

This is the only day tour that visits Háifoss.

Hjálparafoss waterfall

Our first stop is on the way to Landmannalaugar is Hjálparafoss. Located in Þjórsárdalur valley, Hjálparafoss is a double pronged waterfall framed by stunning basalt formations, remnants of an eruption at the nearby Hekla volcano. The falls are actually the culmination and meeting point of two rivers, the Þjórsá (Iceland´s longest river) and the Fossá.

The pool which forms at the base of the falls in olden times offered relief and water to weary travelers from the north, which led to its name, which translates to Help Falls in English.

Hnausapollur Volcanic Crater Lake

This crater lake is an underappreciated gem. Naturally places that are easy to reach attract more eyes and hype but Iceland is dotted with many hidden gems like this crater. Though less famous than the similar Kerið, Hnausapollur is well worth a visit. This crater was formed during the massive simultaneous eruption of Barðabunga and Torfajökull volcanoes, over 1200 years ago.

Also known as Bláhlynur, a reference to the turquoise blue hue of the water.

Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is a highland region which forms part of the 470m2 Fjallabak nature reserve.

The area usually becomes accessible for day tours in June, depending on the degree of havoc caused to the roads by the spring meltwaters. This rough F-road is one to avoid in anything but 4x4 vehicles. Luckily for you, our sturdy highland bus is up to the challenge.

Famous for its colorful unique terrain with rhyolite hills and lava fields, this is a hiker´s paradise. Your guide will take you on the trail with wonderful photo opportunities and a well-earned sense of accomplishment your reward. And what better way to end a hike than to soak your weary feet in a hot-spring. Just remember to bring your swimsuit.

Landmannalaugar also serves as the start and end point for Iceland´s most popular trek, the 55km Laugarvegur trail to Thorsmörk.

After our time together in Landmannalaugar, we embark on the journey back west, arriving to the city in time for you to catch a late dinner.

    An amazing experience! It was our first time in Iceland, and we couldn’t have asked for a better trip. For six unforgettable days, we travelled along the famous Ring Road with our guide, Vjeran, who was friendly, knowledgeable, and highly professional throughout the entire journey.     During our Iceland vacation, we took two tours with Bus Travel Iceland: the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon; and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. On the exceptional Golden Circle tour with a relaxing conclusion at the enchanting Blue Lagoon, we visited the iconic sites along the way, following a fairly packed itinerary but with adequate time for each stop. The guide was knowledgeable in driving the bus and engaging in providing information and telling stories about the places we visited. Higly recommended the fascinating tour to discover the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Departing from Reykjavik, we visited the main towns and iconic sites from the north to the south coast of the peninsula. The excellent Axel guided us, providing interesting details about the places to visit. His expert bus driving skills and precise planning allowed us to see everything in the allotted time, without excessive pressure or fatigue.

When can you hike in Landmannalaugar?

Late June to September. The highland roads to Landmannalaugar are closed by snow the rest of the year, and the opening date shifts with the weather each summer. In season, day tours from Reykjavík (/experience/16823/) run about fourteen hours with a three- to five-hour guided hike and a soak in the hot river. If you have your own 4x4, the meet-on-location hike (/experience/254326/) skips the bus.

How hard is the Laugavegur trek?

Moderate to hard. It is 55 kilometres over four days from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, with river crossings, snow patches in July and weather that can turn to sleet in August. You do not need technical skills, but you need to carry a pack and walk five to eight hours a day. Guided treks (/experience/738812/) handle logistics and camping gear; the luggage transfer (/experience/1036525/) lets self-guided walkers carry a day pack only.

Can you hike to the volcano near Reykjavík?

Yes, when it is safe. The Reykjanes eruption sites at Fagradalsfjall and around Grindavík have drawn hikers since 2021, and guided tours (/experience/629086/, /experience/620679/) follow the routes the Civil Protection authority has open. If there is an active eruption, access changes daily and tours adapt or pause. The lava is usually cooled and crusted; you see fresh black rock and steam, not flowing lava. Wear boots; the ground is rough.

What should I pack for a day hike in Iceland?

Waterproof jacket and trousers, not a poncho; the wind will shred it. Hiking boots with ankle support, wool or synthetic layers, hat, gloves, sunglasses and a packed lunch with two litres of water. In the highlands add a warm mid-layer even in July. Guides carry first aid and route knowledge, not your rain gear. Cotton jeans and trainers are the most common reason people have a miserable day.
