About this experience

Most ship museums keep you behind a rope. Here your group walks up and steps onto the deck of Íslendingur, a full-size Viking ship that actually sailed. In the summer of 2000 she crossed the North Atlantic from Iceland to L'Anse aux Meadows and on to New York, retracing Leif Erikson's voyage a thousand years later.


A visit takes 45 to 90 minutes and includes going aboard the ship and hearing her story, animated films on how she was built, the voyage itself and the story of the Vegvísir, and our photo booth where guests dress in Viking clothing and take their photograph at no extra cost. There is a café with views over the harbour and the open Atlantic, a children's corner, and a shop.


FOR OPERATORS

Completely indoor and open daily, which makes us a dependable stop when weather cancels an outdoor tour. Ten minutes from Keflavík International Airport, forty minutes from Reykjavík, directly on the Blue Lagoon and Reykjanes route. Free parking for every visitor, with room for coaches on site. We can take up to 200 guests at a time.


One guide and one driver come free with every group.


Refreshments are available for groups — Icelandic meat soup with bread, the Thor platter of dried fish and Viking beer, coffee and tea. Ask us for the group menu and we will send rates.


BOOKING

Minimum 10 guests. Same-day bookings accepted. Final passenger numbers are required 48 hours before arrival; the numbers confirmed at that point are the numbers invoiced.


Free cancellation up to 48 hours before arrival. Museum admission is never charged in any cancellation scenario, including a no-show. Where refreshments have been confirmed, 50% is charged within 48 hours and 100% on a no-show.

    I was looking forward to this museum and it did not disappoint. Was the only person with others following shortly after. As soon as I walked in the door, I was kindly welcomed. I paid when I got there and she was very informative and helpful. Lots of great history, definitely a must see! Don't forget to check out the buildings outside as well.

    The highlight is getting to step on the real functional longship used to sail to America in 2000. It really gives a sense of perspective: such a huge build from human scale, but so terrifyingly small and vulnerable from an "ocean going vessel" perspective. Vikings crossed the north Atlantic on open decks like this with no shelter from the elements and about half of them sank (which is also the approximate success rate of modern recreations. ) The ship by itself is about 6/5 stars, but the rest of it is just a cute and simple children's museum with a few big sign boards. I read all of them thoroughly, took tons of photos, watched the short video, stared out the viewing window at the sea, and am literally just trying to pass time from my flight arrival at 7 am until my friend's flight arrives at 3pm, and I still ran out of things to do in about two hours. So the rest of the museum is more like a 3/5 for being so miniscule. They have a cafe (closed today) and a lot of tables so maybe if they added wifi and plugs it would be a really great place to sit around and study or read while waiting for airport things. It's more of a decorative hangout space near the really cool ship than a museum. There are some very cool Greenland Inuit carvings, fwiw.

    It was a nice exhibition but there weren’t many things to do. It was very short visit with a limited amount of things we can do for the most part. We’re just dress ourselves in old Viking clothing and took pictures but that was pretty much it about the interesting bits.
