NORTHERN LIGHTS

Witnessing the Northern Lights is a dream come true—a magical experience that will stay with you forever. Hvolsvöllur, our charming town, offers the perfect setting for Northern Lights viewing, and you can even catch a glimpse through our Northern Lights webcam here.

Although we can’t guarantee a sighting, since the Northern Lights are dependent on weather conditions, your chances are much higher in our peaceful town of Hvolsvöllur than in the busy streets of Reykjavík. For the best views, you need a location with minimal light pollution—and that’s exactly what makes Hvolsvöllur so ideal. Picture yourself watching the auroras dance across the sky while soaking in the rooftop hot tub at Midgard Base Camp or enjoying the view from our outdoor area. Situated just on the town's edge, our location allows you to completely escape any lights with just a five-minute walk.

Each evening, we'll keep an eye out for the stunning Aurora. The Midgard team will keep you informed on the Northern Lights forecast and share useful tips. If the forecast isn’t looking favorable at Midgard Base Camp but is promising within a 1-1.5-hour drive, we’ll take you on a special tour to chase those elusive lights.

THE MIDGARD SPIRIT

The Midgard spirit is woven into every element of our tours—from the warmth and expertise of our team to the welcoming, professional yet laid-back atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. Our guests frequently praise the personalized experiences, the insider access to hidden gems, and the unforgettable moments that only a local touch can provide. Become part of our story and discover the Midgard spirit for yourself—an intangible quality best described as a mix of authentic Icelandic adventure, genuine hospitality, and truly memorable experiences. To see what our happy travelers have to say, we invite you to check out our reviews on Tripadvisor.

STAY AT MIDGARD BASE CAMP

Experience the ideal mix of comfort and adventure at Midgard Base Camp, where hotel and hostel-style accommodations come together with a warm, adventurous atmosphere. Our small town of Hvolsvöllur is not just a haven for adventure and Northern Lights viewing, but it’s also conveniently located near South Iceland's main attractions, making it the perfect gateway to explore the highlands.

✓ Genuinely, friendly team

✓ Our vibe is inviting, cheerful & laid-back

✓ We welcome guests with Icelandic hospitality

✓ Rooftop hot tub and sauna

Comfortable beds

Big communal area with comfy sofas and swings

✓ Gather at the bar with friends, old and new, and toast with local drinks and Midgard cocktails

✓ You pick: One-of-a-kind hostel style bunk beds in 4 to 6-bed dorms or hotel style private rooms with ensuite bathrooms (available for a supplement, subject to availability)

TASTE THE MAGIC OF ICELAND

Our adventure isn’t just about exploring stunning landscapes—it’s also about enjoying great food. Every meal is a chance to savor the flavors of Iceland and share stories from the day’s adventures.

Dine at Midgard Restaurant: rated #1 on TripAdvisor in South Iceland. You’ll enjoy flavorful meals prepared by our talented chefs, who pride themselves on using fresh, local ingredients.

Visit an Icelandic home: Experience true Icelandic hospitality as a Midgard team member invites you “heim” (home).

Traditional Icelandic Lamb: Enjoy lamb just like we Icelanders do at home, reminiscent of a typical Sunday family dinner.

Delicious lunchboxes: Enjoy lunchboxes from Midgard Restaurant while exploring the remote wilderness of Þórsmörk Mountain Reserve.

Local Dining: Visit your guide’s favorite restaurant on the South Coast for an authentic taste of Icelandic cuisine.

Geothermal Baking: Bake your own rye bread using geothermal energy by burying it in the hot ground – a unique and hands-on experience.

Friðheimar Farm: Taste delicious dishes made from their famous tomatoes, grown using sustainable geothermal energy at this unique farm

WHY IS FLEXIBILITY IMPORTANT?

Our core values include fun, family, sustainability, and flexibility. While the first three are fairly straightforward, you might wonder why flexibility matters so much to us. The answer lies in Iceland’s ever-changing weather and road conditions, particularly during the winter months.

That’s why being able to adapt quickly and with expertise is crucial. With decades of experience leading tours in Iceland—and many of our team members serving in the Icelandic rescue team—safety is always our top priority.

When you book the 4-Day Northern Lights Adventure with us, you’re in safe hands. There’s no need to stress about weather forecasts, navigating unfamiliar winter roads, or planning an itinerary that accounts for short daylight hours and other challenges—we take care of it all. We know Iceland like the back of our hand, so you can simply relax and enjoy the magic of your journey.

By booking everything through us—meals, accommodations, and tours—we ensure a smooth and seamless experience. If the weather changes or we return later than expected, we’ll adjust dinner reservations and other plans to keep everything on track. We’ve got you covered, so you can focus on soaking up every moment.

Cancellation for this tour

Cancelling costs 30% of the price within 999 days of departure, rising to 50% within 28 days. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a solid cloud forecast — most operators call it by late afternoon and let you rebook on a clearer night free of charge. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Midgard Adventure decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

Questions on the day: [email protected] · +354 497 1373. How cancellations work in Iceland →

Sold out on your date?

Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.

Who this is not for

  • Not for families with children under 12 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
  • Not available in summer; the operator runs it roughly September to April.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

Why we list it

Midgard Adventure is one of 154 operators we work with — chosen for reliability, honest descriptions and how they treat guests when weather changes plans. We don't list everything; we list what we'd book ourselves. The six checks every operator passes →

What a fabulous adventure! Our tour group and tour guide were fantastic. We were so ecstatic to have such an active group of people on our tour allowing us to do multiple hikes and excursions. Our tour guide Alessandro was absolutely incredible! So knowledgeable & friendly. My husband and I loved chatting with him and learning about his personal background and time in Iceland. I would definitely recommend this excursion it was one of our top 2 highlights of our 9 day trip around the ring road!

Our day in Þórsmörk with Ragnar ended up being one of those travel experiences we’ll be talking about long after we get home. Ragnar was hilarious from the start—full of stories about Icelandic life, culture, and folklore that had our whole group rolling with laughter. But beyond being entertaining, he has an obvious passion for both his country and the work he does. You can tell he genuinely loves sharing this place with people. Because it was a private tour, he really paid attention to who we were and what we enjoyed. He quickly realized our group was up for a little adventure and customized the day to match our energy level, taking us to incredible hikes, stunning viewpoints, and hidden spots we never would have found on our own. Along the way, he taught us about the geology and history of the area in a way that was engaging and easy to understand. And then there were the Icelandic hot dogs. What could have been a quick lunch stop became a memorable part of the day, complete with Ragnar’s enthusiastic tutorial on the proper way to stack the condiments. We may never eat a hot dog the same way again. We had some amazing experiences in Iceland, but this one felt especially personal. Ragnar didn’t just guide us through Þórsmörk—he made us feel like we were experiencing like a local. We’re so grateful for the memories and would recommend him & Midgard Adventure in a heartbeat.

The Þórsmörk Super Jeep hiking tour with Midgard totally exceeded our expectations! A massive shoutout to Carlos Gabriel, who is truly one of the best guides I’ve ever encountered. Not only is he an incredibly skilled driver—making the rugged terrain and river crossings feel completely safe and exciting—but he is also a wealth of knowledge. He kept us engaged the entire time, explaining the fascinating local plants, rocks, and geology along the way. The hike itself was incredibly fun and diverse, taking us through a stunning variety of landscapes. The final payoff at the top was breathtaking, offering a magnificent view of the snow-capped mountains and the massive valley below. If you are looking for an unforgettable adventure in Iceland, I cannot recommend Midgard and Carlos enough!

Our family of 4 had an amazing time with Odi and a small group on a Super Jeep tour of Thorsmork. He was very kind to our 9 year old daughter and spent the entire day engaging us with local knowledge. The scenery is incredible and even with poor weather elsewhere its microclimate was mostly dry and even let some sun break through.

Northern lights — questions people ask

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Iceland?

September to April, when the nights are dark enough. Within that, late September to March gives the longest dark hours, and the equinox months, September and March, often have active skies. There are no lights in June or July; the sky never gets dark. Anyone selling you a June lights tour is selling you a bus ride. Give yourself at least three nights, because clouds, not the aurora, are the usual reason people miss them.

Are the northern lights guaranteed on a tour?

No. Nobody can promise them, and we will not. Two things have to line up: a clear sky and solar activity. Guides check the cloud forecast at vedur.is and drive to gaps, which is the real value of a tour over standing outside your hotel. What most operators do promise is a free second attempt if the lights do not show. Check the exact retry policy on the tour page, because the number of retries and the validity period vary.

Is a northern lights bus tour or a boat tour better?

Bus, if you want the best odds. A minibus can drive an hour inland to find a clear patch; a boat stays in Faxaflói and sees whatever sky is over Reykjavík. Boats are shorter, about two hours, and pleasant with hot chocolate, and Reykjavik Sailors' cruise (/experience/6637/) includes a free retry. For a serious hunt, a small-group minibus like BusTravel's (/experience/150646/) or a 4x4 tour (/experience/1088067/) is the better bet.

Can I see the northern lights from Reykjavík itself?

Yes, on strong nights. The city is small and the sky over the sea to the north is fairly dark. Grótta lighthouse at the western tip and the Ægisíða shoreline are the usual spots, twenty minutes' walk from the centre. On average nights the street lights drown out a faint aurora, which is why tours drive out. If the forecast shows high activity and clear sky, walk to Grótta first and save the tour money.
