Huge respect for the conservation efforts on this island but honestly, expected more from this excursion especially considering the over $200 per person price tag...
The island itself is owned by a lovely couple. The wife is an absolute gem and you can really see the passion she has for this island and its conservation. She will tell you many stories of the history of the island and first-hand experience living on it year-round and of course what they do to keep the island a perfect habitat for the over 60 bird species that flock to it. This alone was worth it, in my opinion, but there were a few things I wish I knew before beginning this journey.
First, the official website leads you on about how between April until the begining of August is the perfect time to see the Puffins, there are thousands, the website claims (we went in June). Come to find out, you can't get very close at all, and have to rely on binoculars or a very powerful camera (my smartphone camera was pretty useless) to see them. Seeing as how this is the main driver for this excursion, I would have liked a bit more clarity on this...
Secondly, the website also alludes to possible whale sightings, and while it's obviously not guaranteed, this is quite misleading nonetheless because even IF a whale came to be sighted, we would also not be able to see anything on the boat that transfers us to and from the island. The windows are small and foggy, not to mention the boat itself is quite crowded so don't count on any meaningful whale or wildlife sightings while on the boat.
Lastly, I think it was just today but I also noticed the boat ride to the island took significantly longer than they claimed it would take. They claim only 30 mins, but we arrived nearly 50 minutes later which noticeably cut our time on the island. The rhubarb pie was delicious but I also would have appreciated a few more options than just coffee to wash it down (tea, milk, juices ect.).
Overall, I liked the excursion, it's a unique experience to just simply be on the island and take in the other wildlife. BUT, I would have appreciated more clarity and transparency especially considering the over $400 USD in total I paid.

An amazing place for bird watchers, plus an interesting insight into traditional rural life for eider farmers. Coffee, cake and souvenirs are available from the lovely owners, plus a guided tour (you can't just wander) and a stick to hold above your head - this was bizarrely effective at stopping the aggressive arctic terns from attacking us. Quite an experience!
