Grundarfjörður cruise excursions

Grundarfjörður is a fishing village of under a thousand people on the north side of Snæfellsnes. The excursions here are short peninsula loops built for ships: Kirkjufell, the lava fields, the black-sand beaches and the glacier seen from the road. The list is short and most of it is small-group or private.

Where you come ashore

Ships tie up at the harbour in the village or tender in. Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in Iceland, is across the bay and about five minutes by road.

What you can actually reach

Comfortably: Kirkjufell and its waterfall, a half-day loop round the western tip of the peninsula, Arnarstapi and Djúpalónssandur on a longer tour. Not from here: Reykjavík sights. It is two and a half hours each way.

Back on board in time

Enter your ship's hours. We started with a typical Grundarfjörður call; yours is in the daily programme.

Ashore 08:00 to 17:00. We keep the last hour before all aboard free.

We list tours that return at least 60 minutes before your all-aboard time, based on the operator's stated duration. We also add about 10 minutes each way between the ship and the departure point. The duration is the operator's estimate and weather can close roads, so treat this as a planning rule, not a guarantee. The ship waits for its own excursions, not for ours.

Fits a normal call

Five to seven hours. On a nine-hour call this leaves you the margin you want.

Before you book

Check your own sailing time first, not the scheduled one — calls get shortened by weather more often in Iceland than almost anywhere, and the ship will tell you the day before. Then pick a tour that is back at least an hour before all aboard.

Tell the operator which ship you are on when you book. They plan around sailings all season and it changes how they run the day. Most of these allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs you nothing if the call changes — the exact rule is on each tour page.

4 of the 7 excursions here have departures published in the next four months. The rest open their calendars closer to the season, which is normal for Icelandic operators — search your ship’s date on the tour page to see it. And 2 of them are too long for a normal call, which is why they sit at the bottom of this page rather than the top.

Not sure it fits? Send us the ship and the date —[email protected] or +354 497 1373. We will tell you if the answer is no.

Grundarfjörður port call: questions people ask

Can I book a shore excursion in Grundarfjörður independently?

Yes, and it is normally cheaper than the ship's desk because you are buying from the same Icelandic operators the ships buy from. The difference is that the ship waits for its own excursions and not for ours, so leave margin: on a standard nine-hour call we would not book a tour longer than seven hours.

How much do Grundarfjörður shore excursions cost?

Typically €1,505 per person across the 7 excursions we sell here from 7 operators, with the cheapest at €175. Private tours and small-group trips sit well above that; coach excursions below it.

What happens if the tour runs late and I miss the ship?

That risk is yours on an independently booked tour, which is the honest trade for the lower price. In practice the operators here run these for cruise passengers all season and know the sailing times, but Icelandic weather closes roads without warning. Book the shorter option on a tight call, keep the operator’s number on your phone, and tell them at booking which ship you are on and when it sails.

Where does my ship dock?

Ships tie up at the harbour in the village or tender in. Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in Iceland, is across the bay and about five minutes by road.

How do I know an excursion fits my Grundarfjörður port call?

Put your own hours into the "Back on board in time" box on this page and the lists re-filter. A tour is shown as fitting when it returns at least 60 minutes before your all-aboard time, based on the operator's stated duration, plus about 10 minutes each way between the ship and the departure point. The operator's duration is their estimate, and weather can close roads, so this is a planning rule, not a guarantee.
