An indoor exhibition in Höfn about the glaciers that come down off Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap, a few kilometres up the road. It takes about an hour: interactive exhibits on how ice, rivers and a changing climate have shaped the south-east, and a virtual-reality section that takes you places a coach cannot. Entry is timed, with slots every 15 minutes from 12:00 to 17:45, and there is no minimum age. It is a good hour on a wet afternoon in Höfn, or a way to make sense of the glacier tongues you drove past on the way in. It does not replace standing on the ice.

Book it if: Families and anyone staying a night in Höfn who wants the glaciers explained before or after seeing them.
