About this experience
Discover places only the locals know.
Local hikes, hidden gems, secluded canyons, breathtaking vistas, cultural sites that most Icelanders don't even know about. Pick-up from Reykjavík is available. Choose your location during the check-out process.Most of the places you will explore are not mentioned in any guidebook. We will take you to places we visit on our days off where nobody else is. If you come across someone it’s most likely a local traveling or a farmer. It’s a truly local experience only offered by Midgard.
The area we will visit is in and around Fljótshlíð, the “hill by the river”, highly affected and formed by the river Markarfljót. A beautiful and peaceful area where a lot of the Icelandic Saga´s happened.
Among the places we may explore are:
- The small canyons and one of our favorite playgrounds underneath Mt. Þórólfsfell.
- The small mountain Stóri Dímon where we may hike 120 meters to the top to witness the fantastidc view or walk around to seek unexpected beauty and adventures.
- We might take you to one of our own “go to areas” around Mt. Þríhyrningur, where there is a lot to explore, rivers to cross, hidden waterfalls and caves to enjoy.
- We love to end the day by visiting a secret place in one of our few forests in Iceland, and taking a sip from an old well, by a farm where the farmers became 100 years old. Drinking from the well is our way of staying young and may become yours too.
This tour is perfect for those that have done our Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour and want to add more of the unbeaten path to their trip. Fits well for families and friends, younger and older, newly married or whoever who wants to have a slow speed day in an unexplored area.
As this is a local tour and Midgard is located in Hvolsvöllur, the hot dog town, where all hot dogs in Iceland are produced, we find it not only our pleasure but our obligation to invite you for a hot dog barbecue on this tour. Vegan version is available as well. You will learn how a hot dog tastes differently depending on in what order you place the ingredients, the onions, the ketchup, the mustard and the remoulade and for each and every guide there is the “only” right way.
We may use our super jeeps or jeeps or a normal car depending on the conditions at the time of your visit.

Cancelling costs 10% of the price within 999 days of departure. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

What a fabulous adventure! Our tour group and tour guide were fantastic. We were so ecstatic to have such an active group of people on our tour allowing us to do multiple hikes and excursions. Our tour guide Alessandro was absolutely incredible! So knowledgeable & friendly. My husband and I loved chatting with him and learning about his personal background and time in Iceland. I would definitely recommend this excursion it was one of our top 2 highlights of our 9 day trip around the ring road!

Our day in Þórsmörk with Ragnar ended up being one of those travel experiences we’ll be talking about long after we get home. Ragnar was hilarious from the start—full of stories about Icelandic life, culture, and folklore that had our whole group rolling with laughter. But beyond being entertaining, he has an obvious passion for both his country and the work he does. You can tell he genuinely loves sharing this place with people. Because it was a private tour, he really paid attention to who we were and what we enjoyed. He quickly realized our group was up for a little adventure and customized the day to match our energy level, taking us to incredible hikes, stunning viewpoints, and hidden spots we never would have found on our own. Along the way, he taught us about the geology and history of the area in a way that was engaging and easy to understand. And then there were the Icelandic hot dogs. What could have been a quick lunch stop became a memorable part of the day, complete with Ragnar’s enthusiastic tutorial on the proper way to stack the condiments. We may never eat a hot dog the same way again. We had some amazing experiences in Iceland, but this one felt especially personal. Ragnar didn’t just guide us through Þórsmörk—he made us feel like we were experiencing like a local. We’re so grateful for the memories and would recommend him & Midgard Adventure in a heartbeat.

The Þórsmörk Super Jeep hiking tour with Midgard totally exceeded our expectations! A massive shoutout to Carlos Gabriel, who is truly one of the best guides I’ve ever encountered. Not only is he an incredibly skilled driver—making the rugged terrain and river crossings feel completely safe and exciting—but he is also a wealth of knowledge. He kept us engaged the entire time, explaining the fascinating local plants, rocks, and geology along the way. The hike itself was incredibly fun and diverse, taking us through a stunning variety of landscapes. The final payoff at the top was breathtaking, offering a magnificent view of the snow-capped mountains and the massive valley below. If you are looking for an unforgettable adventure in Iceland, I cannot recommend Midgard and Carlos enough!

Our family of 4 had an amazing time with Odi and a small group on a Super Jeep tour of Thorsmork. He was very kind to our 9 year old daughter and spent the entire day engaging us with local knowledge. The scenery is incredible and even with poor weather elsewhere its microclimate was mostly dry and even let some sun break through.
