About this experience

Experience Siberian Husky Dog Sledding in North Iceland

Join us for an unforgettable dog sledding tour on snow, combined with a visit to our unchained Siberian Husky Kennel at Vallholt Farm, conveniently located between Akureyri and Lake Mývatn in North Iceland.

Warm Welcome at Vallholt Kennel

Upon arrival at Vallholt Kennel, you will be greeted by one of our experienced Mushers and our beautiful Siberian Huskies. We ensure your comfort by providing access to toilet facilities and offering additional clothing and gear, so you can enjoy the dog sledding experience to the fullest.

Meet the Huskies

Next, you will have the chance to meet the dogs up close. Our Musher will share fascinating details about our Huskies, including their personalities and family connections, allowing you to get to know these remarkable animals before the adventure begins.

Preparing for the Adventure

Before setting out, you will receive a safety briefing to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience. Afterward, it's time to embark on the scenic trail.

The Sledding Experience

Groups of 2 to 4 guests will have a private sled, led by a Musher from Snow Dogs and pulled by 6 to 10 Siberian Huskies. The trail covers a distance of 6 to 8 km and typically takes 40 to 60 minutes, including stops for photos along the way. During the journey, your Musher will explain the basics of dog sledding and how to work alongside these incredible dogs. If conditions permit and you are interested, you may also have the opportunity to help mush the sled with guidance from your Musher.

After the Ride

Following the dog sledding adventure, there will be ample time to spend at the kennel, where you can cuddle, and take photos with the friendly Siberian Huskies.

Tour Details and Contact Information

The total tour time is approximately 2 hours, including the kennel visit. For groups or private tours, please contact us via email at info@snowdogs.is.

Good to know

Dress well in winter, warm shoes, sunglasses, sunblock. Goggles are often a good choice in outdoors activities in the Icelandic winter.

  • If an individual's weight exceeds 100 kg, we kindly request prior notification to ensure we can make the necessary arrangements for their comfort and safety during our activities. Please contact us via email at info@snowdogs.is to discuss any specific requirements.
  • This experience is not deemed suitable for pregnant women due to safety considerations.
  • In case of inadequate snow conditions, we will make efforts to relocate the tour to more feasible grounds. Guests will be promptly informed about the new location the day before the scheduled departure. Should the need arise to cancel a tour, a 100% refund of fees will be provided to our guests.
  • Note that sometimes the dogs get very loud when we are about to leave for the Dog sled ride, they just want to run, not wait....
  • We strongly advise arranging accommodation no more than one hour drive from the kennel the night before the dog sledding experience. Getting here before the tour can be difficult if you are further away because of weather and road condition.
  • Cancelations and a full refund due to bad weather and road conditions only applies to the one hour driving distance from the Snow Dogs Kennel.
  • For visits to Iceland in winter, it is advisable to come equipped with appropriate warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and goggles for your comfort and safety.
  • For safer winter travel in Iceland, vehicles equipped with studded tires and possessing 4x4 capabilities are highly encouraged.

Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a forecast the operator judges unsafe. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Snow Dogs decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

We had an Amazing time! If you love dogs, this place is great and they truly love their animals. You get to pet all of the dogs and they are all loving and very friendly! The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend!! Be prepared for massive knats where you will need to wear the provided head mesh. They provide warm suits, gloves, beanie, and an insect repellant head netting. The bugs and dog yelping could be over-stimulating for some people who are sensitive to noise and bugs.....But we Loved it!!

I cannot say enough about this experience - it was magical! The best part of our Icelandic experience. The staff was fantastic and shared their knowledge and the dogs were amazing - you can tell how much they are cared for and loved. I cannot recommend this enough to anyone wanting an adventure who also loves dog cuddles!!

We had an amazing time. Staff is super friendly, you’re provided with an overall, scarf, gloves and goggles if you don’t have any so you stay warm. They also offer to take as many pictures of you as you like. You can say hello and cuddle the dogs before the sled trip and after. What we loved especially was the dogs were amazingly cared for. Everything was clean and every poop was picked up by the carers immediately, all dogs were well groomed and in their kennels with their friends. They were well socialized with humans and other dogs, but not pressured to be cuddly. The ones that wanted cuddles came to us, the others could stay back. The staff knows every dog by their name. Definitely recommend and we will be back

  • Dog sledding in Iceland: snow or wheels? When the sled actually runs on snow, what a dry-land cart ride is really like, and why almost all the husky inventory sits in north Iceland.
  • Iceland in December: what tours runNearly every winter tour runs in December. Húsavík's big whale boats and the Jökulsárlón boats stop, Akureyri husky sledding starts, and days are four to five hours.
  • Iceland in February: what tours runFebruary runs almost as much as autumn: about 1,300 of our tours show a date in mid-February. Ice caves and snowmobiles are at full strength, and daylight is back.
