About this experience
There’s a reason National Geographic named this 34-mile trek through Iceland’s Southern Highlands one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. The geothermal features give Yellowstone a run for its money, with looming glaciers, hidden waterfalls, inviting thermal springs, and black sand deserts dotted with huge shards of obsidian. This legendary all-women hike will have you sleeping under the midnight sun as you trek from place to place on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

- Elevation Gain: The trail has sections that involve significant elevation changes, which means you should be comfortable with uphill and downhill hiking. Some parts reach higher altitudes and sometimes it can be steep.
- Terrain: The terrain can be rough and varies greatly, including rocky paths, muddy areas, river crossings, and volcanic landscapes. Familiarity with uneven surfaces is beneficial.
- Weather Conditions: The weather can change rapidly, and you may encounter rain, wind, or even snow. Being physically prepared to handle adverse conditions is essential.
- Previous Experience: Having experience in multi-day hiking, backpacking, or hiking in similar environments can be advantageous. If you have completed other long hikes, this will benefit you.
- Training Recommendations: It’s advisable to engage in regular cardio and strength-training exercises in the months leading up to your hike. Focus on walking uphill, increasing your endurance, and practicing with a loaded backpack.
- Food On The Trail: The lack of space and facilities in the huts make it difficult for your guide to prepare numerous complicated dishes. We can only cater to vegetarians and those with allergies.
Cancellation for this tour
No refund once booked. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is wind above the treeline and river levels after rain — the guide decides on the day. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Viking Women decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.
Who this is not for
- Not for anyone unsure on their feet or carrying an injury — the operator rates this as physically demanding, and there is no easy version of the day.
- Not the one to book if your dates might move: this operator does not refund once booked.
Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

I don’t think I have the words to recommend Viking Women Tours with the justice they deserve. Friends and I went for the Eclipse Tour Aug 9-14. Sigrun was our guide for all but 1 day. Hilarious and Witty. Lazer focused and Kind. Knowledgeable and Intriguing. It felt like walking with a legend you’ve not heard of yet but just know the story will be an epic once it’s written. We all adored her. Then we had Saga for our last day. She climbed onto a bus of 16 women who had gotten to know each other very well and would laugh, sing and be silly. She rolled with it like she had been a fly on the wall all week. She gave us an extraordinary last hike, last dinner, last day together. If you are remotely thinking about booking a trip with them, solo or with friends, DO IT!!! Seriously do it, you’ll have a trip that is spectacularly magical

This was an awesome adventure! Iceland is too beautiful to describe! Our guide Sigrun was wonderful, very knowledgeable on Iceland history and told all about Icelandic culture, including the Hidden peoples. She was knowledgeable on the Iceland terrain and definitely knew her way around to show us beautiful sites. I am 73 and completed all the hikes which are optional if you feel you can’t complete. The hotels we stayed in were very accommodating also. Food great too! I definitely would go again. Very positive experience!

I have been on a healing journey and saw the ad for Viking Women Tours in Iceland. I strongly believe stepping out of your comfort zone is how you grow, so I reserved my place without knowing anyone else and I went for it! I was NOT disappointed! Sigrún was not only an amazing and knowledgeable guide, but her own story was something that left me amazed! The women I met and the strength and beauty I saw in each one is exactly what I needed! I came home feeling happy, refreshed, renewed! My only disappointment was that it wasn't long enough ❤️

This 6 day hike was exceptional, from the pre departure support from Viking Women's owner Saga; our guide Kat was awesome, great energy, attention to detail and fun! The trail itself is awesome, magnificent views, fun bunk houses, well supported with transfer of our food and bags etc; all made for a truly great Icelandic experience! Loved it!!

Hiking & trekking — questions people ask
When can you hike in Landmannalaugar?
Late June to September. The highland roads to Landmannalaugar are closed by snow the rest of the year, and the opening date shifts with the weather each summer. In season, day tours from Reykjavík (/experience/16823/) run about fourteen hours with a three- to five-hour guided hike and a soak in the hot river. If you have your own 4x4, the meet-on-location hike (/experience/254326/) skips the bus.
How hard is the Laugavegur trek?
Moderate to hard. It is 55 kilometres over four days from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, with river crossings, snow patches in July and weather that can turn to sleet in August. You do not need technical skills, but you need to carry a pack and walk five to eight hours a day. Guided treks (/experience/738812/) handle logistics and camping gear; the luggage transfer (/experience/1036525/) lets self-guided walkers carry a day pack only.
Can you hike to the volcano near Reykjavík?
Yes, when it is safe. The Reykjanes eruption sites at Fagradalsfjall and around Grindavík have drawn hikers since 2021, and guided tours (/experience/629086/, /experience/620679/) follow the routes the Civil Protection authority has open. If there is an active eruption, access changes daily and tours adapt or pause. The lava is usually cooled and crusted; you see fresh black rock and steam, not flowing lava. Wear boots; the ground is rough.
What should I pack for a day hike in Iceland?
Waterproof jacket and trousers, not a poncho; the wind will shred it. Hiking boots with ankle support, wool or synthetic layers, hat, gloves, sunglasses and a packed lunch with two litres of water. In the highlands add a warm mid-layer even in July. Guides carry first aid and route knowledge, not your rain gear. Cotton jeans and trainers are the most common reason people have a miserable day.
