In Jökulsárlón day tour you can add extra activities like the crystal ice cave available between November 11th - March 31st, the tour will take you to the largest glacier in Europe where you can see a natural ice cave or you can add Boat tours on the glacier lagoon available between 15. May to 30. September.

Travel in Luxury SUV following the picturesque southern coastline passing the villages of Selfoss, Vik and Kirkjubaejarklaustur as well as Skogafoss, a mighty and much photographed waterfall on the south coast.

Continue through the vast desert of Skeidararsandur, an area which can be prone to sand storms. Many of Iceland‘s biggest glacial rivers run into the Atlantic Ocean off the south shore and each year they carry millions of tons of black volcanic sand, constantly altering the shape of the coastline and creating vast black deserts. Just before reaching the lagoon, drive pass Oraefajokull glacier, home to Iceland‘s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjukur, at 2119 m.

Jokulsarlon is a stunning glacial lagoon that is constantly changing as the massive glacier tongue retreats. Icebergs of all shapes, sizes and in many hues of blue, turquoise and white, break off from the glacier and float around the lagoon. You will have time to walk the shores of the lagoon to admire the surreal shapes and take time to photograph the lagoon‘s wonderful, mirror-like reflections. For an even closer view, you can go on a cruise aboard an amphibious vessel and sail amongst the oddly-shaped ice formations. Jokulsarlon is a natural wonder that has to be seen to be believed. This may be one of the longest day tours from Reykjavik but it is also one of the most highly recommended.

Note that the itinerary is subject to weather and road conditions. Warm clothes and sturdy shoes are recommended as the terrain can be rough underfoot.

Do you know how many waterfalls Iceland has? If not, you should definitely book your tour with Erik from Superjeep.is! He has all the answers and so much more. We had an incredible day visiting breath-taking waterfalls and seeing Iceland's second largest glacier. We took private 10 seat super jeep northern lights tour with Birgir. We travelled with 3 little ones and my elderly mother. Birgir went above and beyond assisting us with car seats, ensuring everyone could get in and out of the car safely, and making everyone as comfortable as possible with his hot chocolate, entertaining Icelandic stories and history, and parking the jeep to minimize the intense winds. He was patient and knowledgeable, and we got an amazing lights show. As someone who is not easily impressed, this tour gets 10/10 hands down! Thank you super jeep and Birgir!

Yesterday I went on one of the best tours I’ve ever experienced in Iceland, led by Erik with Superjeep. I enjoyed every second of driving through the snow in a 4x4 to visit the Katla ice cave. I live in Iceland, I’ve been on tours with various companies, and I can say that this company offers truly authentic and unique experiences in groups of just four people. The price is higher than tours for groups of 14–18 people, but the quality is infinitely superior, so it’s definitely worth the investment. Their guides are experts on the country. I thought I knew Iceland, but the lesson in Icelandic geography we had yesterday with Erik and all the stories he told us (not to mention his skilful driving in 30cm of snow) was top-notch.

Ice caves — questions people ask

When can you visit an ice cave in Iceland?

Natural blue ice caves open from around November to March, when the glacier is cold enough for the meltwater tunnels to be safe. They form under Vatnajökull near Jökulsárlón, and the caves change every year. Two exceptions run all year: the Katla ice cave near Vík, which is dark ice striped with ash, and Into the Glacier at Langjökull, a man-made tunnel. If you want the glowing blue photos, come between November and March.

Can I do an ice cave tour as a day trip from Reykjavík?

Only the Katla cave. The South Coast and Katla ice cave tour (/experience/22559/) is about twelve hours from Reykjavík and back. The blue caves at Vatnajökull are five hours' drive each way, too far for a day, so operators sell them as two- or three-day tours (/experience/6131/, /experience/7358/) with a night near Jökulsárlón. If you are self-driving, stay in the Höfn or Skaftafell area and book the Crystal Ice Cave tour (/experience/17337/) from there.

Is the Katla ice cave as good as the blue ice caves?

Different, not worse. Katla's cave under Mýrdalsjökull is black and white, layered with volcanic ash, and open all year. It will not give you the glowing blue tunnel photos from Instagram; those are the Vatnajökull caves, November to March only. What Katla gives you is a shorter super-jeep drive from Vík (/experience/22558/) and availability in summer. If you are here between November and March and can reach Jökulsárlón, choose blue. Otherwise choose Katla.

Are ice caves safe?

With a guide, yes. Operators inspect the caves daily and cancel when meltwater, warm weather or ice movement makes them unsafe, which happens most often in November and March at the edges of the season. You wear a helmet and crampons and stay with the group. Never enter a glacier cave on your own. If your tour is cancelled for safety, you get a full refund or another date, and most operators try to substitute another cave first.
