About this experience

The Westman Islands don't appear on most itineraries. That's precisely why they should be on yours. This private day tour takes you to Heimaey, the largest island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, for a full day shaped by volcanic history, exceptional food, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the North Atlantic.

The journey south from Reykjavík follows the coast before a 30-minute ferry crossing to the island. Your first stop is Eldheimar, the award-winning museum built around a house the 1973 eruption half-buried in lava. The exhibition tells the story of an entire community evacuated overnight - and how they returned, rebuilt, and expanded their island in the process. It is one of the most quietly powerful museums in Iceland.

Lunch follows at GOTT, the island's most celebrated restaurant, where the menu is built around fresh, locally sourced ingredients and everything - bread, sauces, desserts - is made by hand on the premises. The afternoon is spent exploring Heimaey's southern cliffs, sea stacks, and harbour views, with your guide leading a search for Atlantic puffins in their summer nesting grounds along the island's dramatic edges.
