Sólheimajökull glacier hike: public or private?

A public Sólheimajökull glacier hike costs about €95 to €104 a person. A private one lists from €256 for the group. Here is when private is worth it.

Sólheimajökull glacier hike: public or private?

The short version

  • Public Sólheimajökull hikes list from about €95 to €104 per adult.
  • A private hike meeting at the glacier lists from about €256 for the group.
  • Public groups are guided and equipped with crampons and ice axes; check what each operator supplies.
  • Private makes sense for four or more, or for people who need a slower pace.

The short answer: book a public hike. A guided four-hour walk on Sólheimajökull lists from about €95 a person, and the glacier is the same one whichever way you book. Private costs more and mainly buys you a slower pace and a guide to yourself.

Sólheimajökull is an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull, around two hours from Reykjavík and a short drive from Vík. It is the most visited guided glacier in the south for a reason: it is close, it is reachable in a day, and the guides know it well.

The public hikes

Glacier Experience on Sólheimajökull from Arctic Adventures (€95, 4 hours) and Public 4 hour Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike from WayNorth (€95, 4 hours) are close to identical in price and shape. Glacier Wonders (€101, 4 hours 10 minutes) is another Arctic Adventures option at a similar price. North Ice’s glacier hike (€104, 3.5 hours) is slightly shorter.

You walk with a guide, crampons and a small group. Expect a steady pace, a stop for photographs, and some pressure to keep moving. You see the ice, the dirty ash bands, and the blue where the surface is fresh. How much blue depends on the season and recent weather, so we do not promise it.

The private hike

Private Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike Adventure: Meet at the Glacier from Gravel Travel lists from €256 for three hours. The name matters: it meets you at the glacier, so you need your own transport. For a party of four that is about €64 each, which undercuts the public hikes. For two, it is €128 each, which does not.

Private also means you set the pace. That helps a family with an anxious child, a slower walker, or someone who wants to stop often. It is not a longer or more adventurous hike.

Adding ice climbing

Solheimajokull Glacier Hike and Ice Climb from David The Guide (€193, 4 hours) adds climbing to the walk. It costs about twice a plain hike. Worth it if you want to use an axe on a wall. If you only want to see the glacier, skip it.

What to check before booking

  • Meeting point and whether transport is included.
  • Minimum age and any fitness limits.
  • Whether boots, crampons and helmet are supplied.
  • The cancellation rule if wind or rain stops the hike.

Our honest take

Book the €95 Arctic Adventures hike or the WayNorth equivalent. They are the same price and the same glacier, so choose the time that suits your day.

Go private only if you are four or more, or the pace is the issue. Take the ice climb only if you want the climb. And dress for wet cold, because the glacier does not care what the forecast said.
