Meeting point, in 4x4 Adventures Iceland / Fjórhjólaævintýri's words: Meet at our base 15 Minutes before your departure time
About this experience
Embark on a thrilling journey from our adventurous base camp perched on the edge of Grindavik. Set out with your expert guide into the heart of Iceland’s volcanic frontier, where steaming earth and rugged lava fields await. Ascend the mighty outer defensive wall - a true testament to human resilience - and witness firsthand how the fiery eruption nearly breached the town, only to be held back by these formidable barriers. Then, press onward into the town itself, weaving through fractured streets and abandoned houses. Every step offers a fresh perspective and jaw-dropping views you won’t find anywhere else.

If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is wind on the ridge or a change in eruption activity — civil protection decides, not the operator. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 14x4 Adventures Iceland / Fjórhjólaævintýri decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.
Who this is not for
- Not for families with children under 12 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

We did a nighttime tour and had some awesome views! John was a great guide and took us to view the lava fields. Great time, definitely recommend!

Last thing we did in Iceland and it was the best. We got bumped to a later time as the one we booked was full. We ended up with a private tour with Ollie. He was great and took good care of my wife who had never even seen a 4x4! The weather didn’t help at all but still an awesome way to spend the last few hours before our flight. If you are in Iceland, this is worth the time and money!!

An absolute must if you’re visiting Iceland. Our tour guide, Oliver. was knowledgeable and made our experience a memorable. The AV was fun to ride and crossed the harshest of terrains. All snow suits, gloves and helmets were provided. Will definitely come back when we revisit Iceland.

4x4 Adventures was an absolute gem of our trip to Iceland. Oliver was an incredible guide. His knowledge of the volcano system and rescue operations related to previous eruptions turned a fun 4x4 tour into an experience. Since Oliver’s tour, we have been inspired to learn more about volcanoes and cheering for Grindavik and its defenses. During our next trip to Iceland we will definitely come back!
