Our take on this one

Jökulsárlón is 380 km from Reykjavík, which is why this is a fourteen-hour day however you do it. Iceland Premium Tours run it privately in a modified 4x4 with hotel pickup, stopping at Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue on the way out, then the lagoon and the Diamond Beach opposite it. Parking fees are included, food is not. The €1,518 is the vehicle, so the arithmetic only works with four or more aboard. The advantage over the coach version is real on this route: a private car can leave earlier, skip a stop that is fogged in, and stay at the lagoon while the light is good. Departs 08:00; free cancellation to 48 hours.

Discover and learn about Iceland's nature, history, and traditions with your private tour guide as you travel through Iceland's south coast in our luxury modified 4X4 jeep to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. 

We pick you up in the morning to start our fantastic and memorable journey to some of Iceland's most beautiful natural attractions. Two popular destinations are Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, two magnificent waterfalls we will stop at in the first half of the day.

Following these gorgeous sights is another fascinating place, Sólheimajökull, a glacier tongue located between two renowned Icelandic volcanoes, Kalta and Eyjafjallajökull.  The glacier is easily accessible, thanks to a short path leading to a viewpoint and up to the glacier crest, from where you can admire the different shapes and colors that characterize this glacier. 

After a brief visit to Sólheimajökull, our Private Luxury Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach Tour continues to the lovely fishing hamlet of Vk, with its black beaches and sea stacks, and then to Skaftafell and Vatnajökull National Parks, where you will be able to get up and personal with some incredible glacier tongues.

The final destinations and highlights of the journey are Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, with its floating icebergs, and the Diamond Beach, where the remaining pieces of the icebergs collect and shine like diamonds on the black beach. You will earn about the formation of the Glacier Lagoon and you also have the option to join an exciting boat excursion on the lagoon (available May to October) to get even closer to the icebergs and maybe even get to touch them. Please note that the boat rides are optional and not included in the price. Please make sure you book your seats in advance as they get sold out pretty quickly. If you reserve too late, we can't guarantee a spot on the tour. 

A less crowded alternative to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is another lagoon, Fjallsárlón, a little smaller but just as beautiful. Here you may take a boat excursion to observe the glacier up close and learn from local tour guides about the floating icebergs. Please let us know if you are interested in taking a boat ride on Fjallsárlón when booking your Private Luxury Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach Tour. 

An additional winter attraction of the trip: if the weather permits, the Northern Lights may be visible on the way back to Reykjavik. The price of the regular trip includes a bonus, free aurora hunt on the return journey. This is only possible in the winter months, from September to March.

On this exclusive luxury trip, you will have plenty of time to visit each location, breaks for lunch and dinner, as well as extra comfort stops to provide a memorable experience.

We may make further stops to observe waterfalls, glacier tongues, and canyons depending on the weather and scheduling.

We will transport you back to your chosen hotel in Reykjavik at the end of the trip.

    We had the best experience with Örvar at Iceland Premium Tours! We booked 2 private tours over 2 days - the Golden Circle and South Island. We got to see and experience some extra things that we wouldn't have if we had taken a large bus tour, We were also able to tailor the tours to our own preferences.     We booked a private group tour for 10 adults for 5 days through Firebird Tours and they chose Iceland Premium Tours to take us to all the adventures we had planned. Gummi picked us up at the airport and took us around Reykjavik and the surrounding towns that first day and on a Golden Circle tour the following day, sharing history and answering questions along the way. Orvar, Gummi's brother and owner of the company, took us around the island the remainder of our trip. He also shared helpful Icelandic history and tales and even suggested some changes due to the weather. One suggestion was that we visit the Seljalandsfoss waterfall on our way back to our hotel instead of before a scheduled ice cave tour so we wouldn't be late due to the road conditions. The waterfall was amazing under the stars, and we had the place all to ourselves - this was much better than it would have been earlier in the day with the snow for sure! The brothers each made sure to ask if we needed food or water, or to use the facilities whenever the opportunity arose during our drives. They obviously care about the company and the people they share their country with. If we go back, we'll request Iceland Premium Tours!

Lagoons & spas — questions people ask

Is the Blue Lagoon worth it or is it too touristy?

It is busy and it is worth it, once. The water is milky blue from silica, the setting in the Reykjanes lava is unlike anywhere else, and it sits twenty minutes from Keflavík Airport, so it fits an arrival or departure day. Book a time slot in advance; it sells out. If crowds bother you, go early morning or after 20:00. The Secret Lagoon or Fontana on the Golden Circle are calmer and cheaper alternatives.

Can I do the Blue Lagoon on the way to or from the airport?

Yes, and it is the best way to use it. Transfers like IceTransfer's Keflavík to Blue Lagoon to Reykjavík (/experience/1036423/) or the reverse (/experience/1036419/) stop at the lagoon for a few hours with your luggage stored. Allow at least three hours at the lagoon and check that your slot lines up with your flight. Note that the Reykjanes eruptions have closed the lagoon at short notice; check its status before travelling.

What is the difference between the Secret Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon?

The Secret Lagoon at Flúðir is a simple, warm geothermal pool with a bubbling hot spring beside it and basic changing rooms. It is on the Golden Circle, so it slots into a sightseeing day (/experience/17050/, /experience/624446/). The Blue Lagoon is a spa: silica masks, swim-up bar, saunas and a price to match. If you want a soak after a day of waterfalls, Secret Lagoon. If you want the spa day, Blue Lagoon.

Do I have to shower naked before a pool in Iceland?

Yes, at every public pool and most lagoons. Swimwear off, wash thoroughly with soap, swimwear on, then into the water. It is a hygiene rule because Icelandic pools use very little chlorine, and it is taken seriously. Changing rooms are single-sex with open showers; some larger lagoons have a few private cubicles. Nobody looks. It feels odd for thirty seconds and then it does not.
