About this experience

There is no experience more authentically Icelandic than hiking through the surreal landscapes of the highlands followed by a relaxing soak in a geothermal pool.

The Canyon Baths

The Húsafell locals who undertook the Canyon Baths project went to great lengths to keep the entire structure as environmentally unobtrusive, sustainable and true to the area’s heritage as possible. Choose from different geothermal pools of varying temperatures, 30-41°C (86-105°F), with a spectacular view of the surrounding canyon, mountains and glaciers.

AN AUTHENTIC ICELANDIC SOAK

Constructed from locally sourced, natural materials like flagstone from the canyon floor, the baths are hot-spring fed pools designed to blend into the environment seamlessly using the age-old methods that created Snorralaug, a heritage site pool dating back to the 10th century. The on-site bathhouse is made from salvaged timbers from the area. Even the hooks in the changing room are repurposed horseshoes from a nearby family farm.

THE TOUR TO THE BATHS

Led by a knowledgeable local guide in English, this year-round tour begins with a short ride from the Húsafell Activity Centre to the trailhead in the remote Icelandic Highlands. On this 2-hour tour we enjoy a relaxed walk among natural wonders not found in many guidebooks, including the spectacular two-tiered waterfall Langifoss. We’ll also learn about Iceland’s renewable energy practices, cross an icy stream of glacial meltwater and see the site to Okjökull, Iceland’s first glacier claimed by climate change. Note that the route can change due to unforeseen weather circumstances such as snow, ice, mudd or water.

The highlight of our excursion is a serene soak in the Húsafell Canyon Baths, a surreal hot spring paradise that has to be seen to be believed. Enjoy half an hour of relaxing, recharging and breathing in the pure Icelandic air before heading back to Hotel Húsafell.

PLEASE NOTE

This hike is rated as easy and is appropriate for all skill levels. However, there are 64 steps down to the canyon baths. There is a maximum of 16 participants per outing. During the Covid19 pandemic we encourage guests to bring their own towels. If you have reserved your hotel room direct with Hótel Húsafell, you receive a special discount for this excursion, please contact hotel reception for further information.

Cancellation for this tour

Cancelling costs 50% of the price within 4 days of departure. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is closed F-roads or a highland storm — decided by the Road Administration and the driver. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1Husafell Canyon Bath decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

Who this is not for

  • Priced per vehicle, so it is poor value for one or two people and good value for four or more sharing.
  • Not available in winter; the operator runs it roughly May to September.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

Why we list it

Very basic place. Hard to get standard amenities like robe and slippers. Restaurant very mediocre and here’s an anecdote that encapsulates our review: When I asked for and extra little dish of ketchup, they had the gall to charge me 350 Icelandic krona!!

What an incredible stay! I was traveling with my grandmother and they went above and beyond to provide exceptional service. We saw the auroa borealis and had an incredible meal. Having hot baths on site is so so nice. The service is so great here and it is the people that make it special. THANK YOU!

This was our second time staying at Hótel Húsafell. Both times have been amazing. The staff is all very friendly. The restaurant meals were delicious. The room and hotel is comfortable and cozy. The hotel can coordinate several great excursions. We did the lava cave tour and the cannon baths; both were great. They provide a Northern Lights wake-up call, which helped us catch the lights.

A supposed four star hotel that provides a flask of coffee at breakfast and cheap instant coffee in the rooms. I mean, wow - at these prices! I witnessed a breakfast guest asking for an americano and being shocked when told that it would be an extra cost. The staff helped themselves to a cappuccino though, so they're happy. I've stayed at plenty of three star hotels in Iceland that have Nespresso machines in guest rooms and bean-to-cup machines at breakfast - and they were much cheaper to stay at. Also, the music is simply TOO LOUD in the breakfast/dinner venue: I like Billy Joel as much as the next guy, but do I want Piano Man (a feisty number) being belted out whwn trying to speak to my companion over a chilled breakfast?! I do not. Spa pools were quite dirty (lots of dead insects floating) and oddly painted blue (which they hadn't kept up, so it was all cracked).
