Five days in Iceland works better from a Reykjavík base than behind the wheel
With five days you can base in Reykjavík and take three day tours, or rent a car and move every night. We explain why we'd usually stay put.
Five days is the point where a rental car starts to look sensible. It is also the point where people book five different hotels, spend every morning packing and every afternoon driving. There’s a calmer version. Day 1 is arrival at Keflavík, day 5 is the flight home, which leaves three full days. Three full days is exactly three good day tours.
The Reykjavík-base plan
Unpack once. Sleep in the same bed. Each morning a minibus collects you and each evening drops you back within walking distance of dinner.
Day 2: the Golden Circle. Arctic Adventures’ Golden Circle Small Group Tour is eight hours for €107 and covers Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss with a smaller group than the big coaches. Day 3: the South Coast. BusTravel Iceland’s South Coast Waterfalls, Glacier & Black Sand Beach Tour runs ten hours for €114 to Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara. Day 4: Snæfellsnes. BusTravel’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula Tour is eleven hours for €124 and gets you to Kirkjufell, the Arnarstapi cliffs and the lava fields under the glacier.
That’s €344 per person for three days of touring. Slot a morning whale watch in on day 5 if your flight leaves late: Elding’s Reykjavík Classic Whale Watching is three hours from the Old Harbour for €103.
The downside is real. Three long bus days in a row is tiring, and you see everything on the operator’s schedule, not yours. The Snæfellsnes day in particular is a lot of driving for the stops you get. You also never leave the south-west corner.
The rental car plan
Rent at Keflavík, drive the Golden Circle on day 2 and sleep near Selfoss or Hella. Day 3, the South Coast to Vík. Day 4, either push on to Jökulsárlón and back (a long day, roughly five hours of driving on top of the stops) or turn around and do Snæfellsnes on the way back to the airport. Return the car on day 5.
You get to stop where you like, stay at a waterfall until the tour buses leave, and eat where locals eat. With a car you can reach Jökulsárlón, which no single day tour from Reykjavík does comfortably.
The costs stack up. Car hire, the insurance you’ll actually want, fuel, four different hotels and paid car parks at the main sights. For two people the tour version is usually cheaper, and from October to April the driving itself becomes the risk. Ring Road conditions change by the hour in winter and closures are common. Our honest take
For a first visit, two people, any month from October to April: stay in Reykjavík and take the three tours. Add the whale watch if the flight allows. You’ll see the three classic regions, sleep properly, and spend nothing on insurance excess.
Rent the car if there are four of you, you’re visiting June to September, and Jökulsárlón matters to you. The per-person maths tilts in your favour with four in the car, and the summer daylight forgives late arrivals. The tradeoff is a trip that’s more work, and if the weather turns you’re the one deciding whether to drive. The planner has both versions; start with the base plan and swap days out.
