Reykjavík tour pickup: hotel door or bus stop?
If your hotel is in central Reykjavík, the bus collects you from a numbered tour bus stop, not your door. Be there at the start of the 30-minute window.

The short version
- About 1,480 of the roughly 2,120 tours we hold details for include pickup.
- Tour buses are not allowed into central Reykjavík's old streets, so downtown hotels use designated tour bus stops.
- Pickup usually takes up to 30 minutes. Be at your stop when the window opens, not when it closes.
- Some operators list the pickup start as the tour time, others start pickup 30 minutes before. Read your confirmation.
- Driving to the meeting point yourself can be much cheaper: Silfra snorkelling is €120 there and €186 with Reykjavík pickup.
If you are staying in central Reykjavík, your tour almost certainly picks you up at a bus stop, not your hotel door. The city keeps tour buses out of the narrow streets of the old centre, so operators collect from designated tour bus stops, usually a few minutes’ walk from your hotel. Hotels outside the centre often get door pickup. Either way, be ready when the pickup window opens.
How pickup works
When you book, you pick your hotel or the nearest bus stop from the operator’s list. If your hotel is in the restricted area, the list sends you to a stop. The stops are numbered, and operators point you to busstop.is to find yours. Most hotels are within about five minutes’ walk of one.
About 1,480 of the roughly 2,120 tours we hold details for include pickup. Most say pickup “can take up to 30 minutes”. A small van or minibus drives round the stops and hotels on its list. On the big day tours it often takes you to a central terminal, where you change to the coach for the day.
The time on your ticket
This catches people out. Operators do not all mean the same thing by the departure time.
Action Adventures’ Superview ATV (from €168) says pickups start about 30 minutes before the tour time. Others say the opposite: the time on the ticket is when pickup starts, and it may take half an hour after that. Read the pickup line in your confirmation, and be outside at the earliest time it gives you.
The driver will not come into the lobby to find you, and can’t wait long. There are other stops to cover. If no one has come 30 minutes after the window opened, call the number on your confirmation. Don’t take a taxi to the meeting point without telling them. A missed pickup counts as a no-show on most tours, and that usually means no refund.
Hotel door or bus stop: when it matters
For most tours it barely matters. You walk five minutes to a stop. It matters more in three cases.
Early starts in winter. A 07:45 pickup in January is in the dark, in wind and sometimes ice. Five minutes is fine. Fifteen with a child is not. Check which stop you are given before you book a hotel.
Night tours. The Northern Lights Bus Tour from Reykjavík (from €73) leaves at 20:30, 21:30 or 22:30 and comes back after midnight. You will be standing at your stop late at night. Dress for it.
Airport transfers with luggage. A private transfer such as Prime Tours’ KEF to Reykjavík (from €266) can usually go to your door in a car or small van. Groups over eight in a bigger vehicle may be dropped at the nearest bus stop instead.
Meeting at the place instead
If you have a car, driving to the meeting point is often much cheaper. Arctic Adventures’ Silfra snorkelling is from €120 if you meet them at Þingvellir. The same tour with Reykjavík pickup is from €186. The €66 difference is the transfer. The snorkel is the same.
On city-based tours the difference is smaller or none, because pickup is included in the price either way. BusTravel Iceland’s Golden Circle with Perlan (from €109) collects from hotels and tour bus stops and drops you at Perlan at the end. Note that last part: some combined tours end somewhere other than where they started, and the drop-off is not always back at your hotel.
Our honest take
Book a hotel within five minutes of a tour bus stop and you will never think about this again. Check the stop before you book a downtown room, especially for a winter trip with early starts. Read the pickup line in every confirmation, be outside at the start of the window, and save the operator’s phone number. If you have a car, drive to anything outside the city, like Silfra. It saves money and an hour of collecting other people.
