Seven days on the Ring Road, driving yourself or letting someone else
The full Ring Road in a week is doable either way. We compare a self-drive with BusTravel Iceland and Arctic Adventures packages and say which fits whom.
Route 1 circles the country in about 1,330 kilometres. Seven days is the minimum we’d give it, and that already counts day 1 as arrival at Keflavík and day 7 as the flight home. So the loop itself gets five driving days. Whether you hold the wheel or sit behind a guide changes the trip more than any other decision you’ll make.
Driving it yourself
Clockwise or anticlockwise, the standard week goes: Golden Circle to the South Coast, Vík to Jökulsárlón and Höfn, the East Fjords to Egilsstaðir, Mývatn and Akureyri, then the long run back to Reykjavík through Borgarfjörður. Roughly three to five hours of driving a day, more if you detour.
What you gain is control. You stop at Stuðlagil because the light is right. You skip Dettifoss because it’s raining sideways. You eat at the petrol station in Kirkjubæjarklaustur at 20:00 because you can.
What you lose is margin. One closed road in the east, one day of gales in the south, and the loop no longer closes. There’s no buffer in a seven-day Ring Road; the last day is the flight. You also book six hotels along a route where the good ones fill up months ahead in summer. And from October to April we simply wouldn’t do this loop in a hire car unless we’d driven Iceland in winter before.
The guided packages
Two operators in our list run proper Ring Road weeks.
BusTravel Iceland’s 7 Day Iceland Ring Road & Snæfellsnes is €2,130 per person and runs in winter, when self-driving is hardest. It covers the Golden Circle, South Coast, the southeast lagoons, the north, and finishes with Snæfellsnes. Hotels and transport are in the price. It’s a coach group, so you move on the coach’s timetable.
Arctic Adventures’ 7 Day Complete Iceland Adventure Package is €2,414 and runs all year. The “adventure” in the name is the difference: activities such as glacier walking are built in rather than sold as extras. Their 6 Day Around Iceland Adventure Standard Package is €1,988 for the same loop with fewer activities; it fits a seven-day trip with a spare day in Reykjavík at the end.
The tradeoff with any package is the schedule. Stops are timed, the group waits for nobody, and you’ll spend some hours looking at the back of a seat. If you’re on your own, you pay a supplement for a room alone. Lunches are usually your own cost.
What the money actually buys
Split the package price into its parts. Six nights in mid-range hotels around the Ring Road, a driver-guide who knows which road is closed before the sign goes up, fuel for 1,300-plus kilometres, and a fixed price with no insurance excess if a gravel road chips the windscreen. For one or two people in winter, the package is often not much more than the self-drive total, and the risk sits with the operator.
For four people in July, the sums go the other way. One car, split costs, and the daylight runs past midnight.
Our honest take
October to April: book the package. BusTravel’s seven-day for the price, Arctic Adventures’ if you want glacier time included. You give up freedom, you get a trip that finishes on schedule.
May to September, two or more of you, and you’ve driven on gravel before: drive it yourself and use the guided day tours in the southeast for the glacier bits. Build the loop from the planner, then be honest about how many hours a day you’ll really enjoy at the wheel. The people who love self-drive Iceland are the ones who planned for four hours and drove four, not the ones who planned for four and drove seven.
