Our take on this one
A motion-seat simulator in the Harpa concert hall: ten minutes of real eruption footage with heat, vibration and moving seats, then a thirty-minute exhibit with a live earthquake monitor, an interactive volcanic map and short films. Shows run every fifteen minutes from 10:00 to 19:30, it is fully wheelchair accessible, and the minimum age is four. At €29 it is the cheapest volcano-related thing we list, and it is indoors and five minutes from the harbour. Be clear about what it is — a well-made simulator ride and exhibit, not a volcano. The listed duration of fifteen minutes refers to the ride slot; allow about three quarters of an hour with the exhibit.
- Book it if
- Families with young children, and anyone with an hour to fill in central Reykjavík in bad weather.
- Skip it if
- It is a simulator. If you want actual volcanic ground, the Lava Show pours real molten rock and a Reykjanes hike costs nothing.

Cancellation for this tour
Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is wind on the ridge or a change in eruption activity — civil protection decides, not the operator. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Volcano Express Iceland decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.

My friend and I visited this today and we had such a great experience! The seat shakes back and forth, goes up in the air so your feet are no longer touching the floor, you feel the cool air from flying, and heat from the volcano eruption. The presentation is 15 minutes long which seems really short, however, the photography in the presentation is so amazing you feel like you're really there.

I actually did this on my last day in Iceland. I had just enough time to see the beautiful Harpa concert hall building on a short walk in a new neighborhood. The show was excellent! Beautiful photography and even a bit of a thrill. Great activity at a great value.

"Mixed feelings" is a good and honest expression to describe the experience. It feels new and interesting only for those who haven't experienced the more modern so-called 5D experiences. A little too much shaking and rattling, and a bit overpriced. The free display in the hall is somehow more exciting than the warm steamy cinema experience.

We intended to visit Harpa for the architecture and were delighted that the Volcano Express and experience was also there - we didn’t know it was! Thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the atmosphere created in the space. Buckle up as it gets bumpy in places, I reached out to my husband it took me by surprise that much! The motion and hot air blown into your face truly added a whole other level. The actual experience wasn’t that long - about 10-15 minutes. there is also an educational space outside where you can watch short films in your chosen language which we enjoyed too. At 2990 ISK (£18) per adult we thought it was borderline ok. But everything in this city is very expensive. They do need to be aware and not put people off from going! We were lucky, we visited and there were no crowds (12.30pm), as a couple there were only another 4 people there! But tbh there’s plenty of room on your seat it shouldn’t feel crowded. Best for - everyone! Loved this little surprise under Harpa 🌋 highly encourage you to go it was brilliant!!

- Volcano Express in Harpa: is it worth €29?A 10-minute simulator ride plus a 30-minute exhibit in Harpa, from €29. Worth it for kids and a wet hour in town, not as your main volcano experience.
- Guided day hikes from Reykjavík: which one to bookFour guided hikes from Reykjavík on the Reykjanes peninsula, €117 to €1,040: the Seltún trek, a volcano bus tour and two private options compared.
